Senior Citizens

Leviticus 19:32

32 " 'Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD.

Older folks today are called "senior citizens." Originally the designation referred to those who had lived longer and therefore deserved more respect. Today the term seems less positive. It often refers to the rejected, the helpless dependents, the infirm, the useless in our society. There are even those over the age of sixty-five who refuse to take the benefits owed to them because they dread the label "senior citizen."

According to God's value system, men and women who have lived long and well should be highly esteemed. Because they have lived longer than others, they have come to accept the ups and downs and disappointments in relationships. They are well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the church and have learned how to love and respect it anyway. They have observed the contributions of many generations of people and therefore possess a great deal of wisdom to contribute to our world.

God calls them "aged" and "elderly" and says they merit honor from those who are younger. We honor God when we rise and give respect to those he loves.

This is very true and so sad. In today's society being old is being left behind and rejected, for most older folks this is true. In my younger days these were the people who were looked up to and looked at in awe and showed a lot of respect because they deserved it. And they still do.
