Windows XP Visual Style Switch Hang Up After WindowBlinds Uninstall

WindowBlinds Enhanced 4.50 Post-uninstall VS Switch Hang Up

In Windows XP SP2, after uninstalling WindowBlinds Enhanced 4.50, Windows Classic Style (no visual style, in fact) is the only one that can be choosen from list. Any attempt to choose any available Windows XP Visual Style (ie, Windows XP's Style) leads to an endless switching cycle that never finishes (a hang up in practice) forcing the user to hard reset the computer.

Windows Themeing Service is not disabled nor shutdown at any moment, thus WBE 4.50 uninstall procedure could be messing up the Registry or Windows XP itself.

Anyone could suggest a workaround not involving Windows XP re-installation?

VisualStyle,

I would try reinstalling WindowBlinds, reboot computer, start WindowBlinds and select and apply any skin, then unload WindowBlinds by right-clicking the system tray icon > Unload WindowBlinds.

This will give you the classic style. Right-click an empty spot on the desktop > select "Properties" > on the "Themes" tab - select "Windows XP" from the Theme drop down list > click "Apply".

If all goes well, uninstall WindowBlinds.

If you don't unload Windowblinds, and then revert to the Windows XP theme before uninstalling, the classic theme may still be tied to WindowBlinds program in some way (perhaps a ".dll" or something) - which creates an issue if you uninstall the program.

I hope this helps.

Again, thank you Corky O!

Please note I'm actually crashing my head against the wall!

Considering I'm not a newcomer I can't figure out how I didn't managed to try that easy way ~:O

The following sequence worked for me:
1.- Installed WBE 4.5 accepting 'Automatic' (and thinking about 'Custom' if unsuccessful) (didn't reboot),
2.- Selected Windows XP Style from "Display Properties/Appearance/Windows & buttons",
Here my Windows XP SP2 successfully applied the visual style again (as prior to 1st install of WBE 4.5).
3.- Uninstalled WBE 4.5 as common thru "Add/Remove Programs",
4.- Rebooted and played around switching visual styles for safe and all is OK.
