In all the discussions lately I have been reading on religion.. seeing as JU has lately become a religious debating forum rather than the usual political.. which is a nice change actually. Well what I have noticed is that mostly people have been referring to God as a He.

If God is omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent... why do people automatically refer to God as a He? Why not a She?

It would make more sense to me that if God is creator then God would be more female?

But making the balance of both.. being an androgenous being would make more sense to me.

I think Sugar High Elf wrote an article asking the same question a while back. If god is indeed god then god is whatever gender he/she/it chooses to be. I think that god is a she, but can't offer supporting evidence, just a feeling. But even if that wasn't the case, who am I (or any of you) to tell god that they have to be one gender or the other (or neither, both, whatever). As for why he is used, well jesus was male (sons tend to be male) and the church has these ideas about only men leading it. So from that god has gotten himself attached to the male pronouns. Although, if I'm remembering my native american (which is a silly term since they arn't really natives) history right, they worshiped god as a female/mother figure. So maybe the gender attached to god varies by religion? Just so happens that the larger relgions out there decided to use he. Which raises the question, what gender would god like us to refer to he/she/it as? I think 'it' sounds too impersonal and rude, so which of the others to use? Unless god wants to use the 'it' for whatever reason, if god showed up on my doorstep and told me to call it 'it' then I think I would. Tends not to be terribly wise to tick off the almighty

For some reason I think it has to do with a predominately male based religious domination. Look at priest ordinations and the stink that is caused when women want to become preists.

Which raises the question, what gender would god like us to refer to he/she/it as?

It I agree sounds impersonal, so I guess what if God is just referred to as God He/She all knowing powerful and seeing. The Universe and beyond.

Why do you think you would be punished?

I tend to think that if we God is everything.. yes everything.. that means us as well then why would God punish him/herself?

For some reason we cannot break past the point of thinking that we are not seperate from God.

Hmmm...God with a penis? I don't know. Why would He *need* a penis in the first place? He probably doesn't need to urinate and He doesn't procreate like a human would...

I guess when I *picture* what I think God looks like, I think of a more masculine face, but...I guess I don't really even think about gender. But...when God came to Earth, 'he' came as a man, though...huh?

To assign a gender to an omnipotent and omnipresent being is to define a limit.  As the very definition of God is "without limit", you do them a disservice.

God is not a gender.  God is all that was and will be.  That means HE and SHE.

Dont project our meager comprehension to that which is beyond it.

If we are to believe the Judeo/Christian/Islam teachings, we (humankind) were made in the image of God, so yes, one would have to agree.  At least those who are of the JCI faiths.

If God is, then God transcends human understanding of "male" and "female".

Assuming that God is the Creator/Creatrix of all things, then God must have access to both male and female qualities.

My sense of the matter is this:

The relationship between human males and females is a symbol, or metaphor, or echo, of the relationship between God and humanity. Thus, even though God's nature includes both male and female aspects, His is the "male' role in the relationship between us and Him. It is for thsi reason that we refer to Him in masculine terms. Not because He is "male" in the sense that we understand it, but because "male" is the closest human concept we have, to make (limited) sense of HIs role in our relationship.

What I've always wondered is, if the Christian God is supposed to be our Father and later our Husband, does that mean He's looking forward to a second Creation, an offspring of the marriage of God and Man?

As I have said in previous questions like this, gender is for reproduction. There's zero reason to believe that God would have any gender at all, especially since genesis portrays the creation of human gender as an afterthought. If everything inherantly needed a gender, then all the organisms on earth would have them. On the contrary, the ones who reproduce sexually have gender, and the other ones don't.
