major sound problem issues w/SB audigy

Hello to all, I hope someone can help me. I have Galciv on latest patch 1.04a.62 with bonus pak as well. I downloaded all this through Stardock central. I am using windows 2000 (SP3)and latest audigy drivers(5.12.2.381). Also downloaded ms_mp3codec.exe as per troubleshooting. When I start up galciv and get to the opening menu and then choose start new civ the music gets choppy and the program doesn't respond. Sometimes I can kill the galciv process via the task manager and sometimes I can't. Most of the time I have to reboot.
This looks like a very cool game I can't even play it. I have looked in the forums and newgroups to no avail. Has anyone suffered the same issues? Has anyone been able to overcome them? All help is appreciated.

I had the same issue , actually the cause was not SB but the audio codec I had installed , so what I did is removed all "external" audio codecs that I had on my system and installed the Microsoft's one . This fixed the issue (in two other games too ) .

If you have ThreadedInitialLoading=1 try setting it to zero.  Also, occasionally programs like WinDVD will take over your audio/video associations and cause problems. You may have to try uninstalling them if that's the case.
