Justify Anything, Even Slavery! - A Biblical Response

     Just a quick note here... While the Bible certainly has many great points using it as "proof" of God's will is a double edged sword. Want to justify slavery? Use the following:

Exodus

21:2 If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

21:7 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.

Deuteronomy

15:12 And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.

Colossians (Paul)

4:1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.
 
3:22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;
 
Or "prove" that God is against it out of the same book with these!

Exodus

Ex.21:16 He that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

     My point is NOT that the Bible is a bad book or that Christians are evil or any of that claptrap but merely that the Bible is about as good a "proof" of God's mind as a Betty Crocker Cookbook is.

You do love to stir up discussions, don't you? I am happy you are reading the Bible in a critical manner. That is the only way to do it, except perhaps with faith. I am glad that you have donned your flame suit. You will need it. Think deeply. Be happy.

God's mind and Slavery. I guess you need to check out Tom Skinner on this one GW. He is the champion of civil rights in America and is an authority on the Holy Scriptures. My personal opinion is that you are barking up the wrong tree, when it comes to attempting to assemble criticizm, why not ask the Axis. Moderateman or GM, or Draginol...my honest opinion, God is way bigger than that. The whole thing of how slavery came into being was hardly instituted by God. From what I read and that is if your are using the Bible as your point of reference, and this is a stretch, not for me, mankind has always need others to do things for them. Hired help. In the end it is how you treat your servants that really count, and from what I know God treats his servants very well, but the slothful and extravagent and disbedient servants He consigns to a place of mourning and gnashing and wailing. Triple serious, I think you need to dial God more frequently and read a little of the New Testament. Jesus Christ, enjoyed freeing slaves and I guess the human rights activists like Tom Skinner testify to God's real mind on the barbaric act of Egyptian slavery. He certainly set his people free, but look at them now, this is a jumble. I wish you well in the pursuit of the Mind of God...........huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge is the mind of God.

I still think that the Bible is not to be read literally, but with faith and understanding. Plus, I think it is a book of suggestions as oppossed to rules or instructions. Poetry is the best way to read the Bible for me.

That perception is a little alarming. We used to have a suggestion box....it ended up becoming a 'kitty' ~ money box....If you are reading Dante maybe I would agree. 'not to be read literally' + faith and understanding = something really vague and mystifying ? Like poetry, I get where you are going. Dante's Inferno sort of like the bible...mmmm.....????.....scratch, scratch...ahhhhhhhhh no. Milton, mmmm...possibly. Sure there is a lot of poetry in the bible, like Song of Solomon, and King David's Psalms...but the Bible does not reveal suggestions, but instead a character, guess who....the boogie man, and you're it. Seriously, the bible is to be read with as you said, faith and understanding, or reason. The only suggestion I ever noticed, was that we repent, after that it is all about revelation, getting to know Jesus better. Paul explains it very well, when he talks about the bible as a mirror......it is all about seeing Jesus and being transformed. [aeryck - joeKnowledge]

I agree aeryck... the bible is more than just a book. More than just poetry, history and prohecy.. It is the avenue which leads the lost sinner to God and His Salvation... Jesus Christ.

To read it with anything less than the mind of Christ and faith would be likened unto a man with a teminal strickened disease and he has the cure in a bottle yet he only allows it to be a coffee table ornanment... doesn't tap in to its true power.

I just read a passage last night concerning that some of the laws God made were not condoning the acts, but were acknowledging that men's hearts are hard or something and well, I'm looking for it.

Being a follower of the Bible, I'll agree with you here. Too many people demand things of the Bible that is was never meant to be. The Bible is a history of God's dealings with the people and prophets before, during and after Christ's ministry here on earth.

I may use it to reinforce why "I" believe something, but that only reinforces why I accept it, not why it is true. Reading scriptures alone will never bring anyone to Christ. The Holy Ghost is the witness of Christ, not the words in a book.

It has always entertained me that people look to the physical to prove the spiritual and the spiritual to prove the physical. ;~D
