Thinking of Starting a Small Business

While I've been sitting around healing from my injuries, I've been giving a lot of thought to what I'm going to be doing for a living in the future. While trucking was a nice break for a while, it isn't my real vocation. My degree is in Electronics and computers are what I enjoy.

I've been thinking lately of starting a small computer business. In particular building custom PCs, service, and repair. This would be something I really enjoy doing as well as being less demanding on my body which is damaged beyond full recovery.

Just an idea I'm toying with right now. Anyone in the business who may have comments or suggestions, I'm all ears so to speak.

As a captain of industry I decided to offer some advice.

Unless you can offer a sevice which every other teenage peasant out there building computers cannot, you will fail. Unless you live in an extremely isolated area where no peasants are doing this kind of thing it is very unwise to rely on this as a main source of income. Perhaps as a side line to top up your government benefits?

MasonM; I've been in that business for over 15 years now. Trust me on this. Stay away from building as a main thrust. There's way to many people in it and no money to be made. Stay with service and repair. No matter where you live, a good servive and repair is hard to find. Watch your prices though. Too high and it'll put you out of business real quick.

Thanks drmiler; I already surmised that the bulk of the business would be in that area as the plain vanilla store boughts are getting less expensive all the time. Thanks for your input.

Well, you could try do develope a website that helps peopel fix there computers or do what the guy said up there and ofer service repair.

While your offering service repair you can also build your design from scratch computer selling. The same customers that come in to get their computer fixed might be the same ones that will buy a new computer too later on.

Nevertheless, base your company on repair.
