Jesusss, another Saturday. They seem to keep getting closer to one another of late.
Karen called from Miami yesterday. She had finished her meeting and wanted to know whether I was up for a martini after she got to the airport. Guess what? I asked her to come. She stayed just long enough for me to be too late for the reading group at the Library. I wasn't eager to talk about the assignment.
We're reading the O Henry Award stories for last year. I've read 4 of 'em and they all suck. I fear that the world of the Short Story has passed me by--I have been reading the current Glimmer Train story book, too. They don't please me any more than the O. Henry ones. Have to figure out what it is that displeases me. Surely it's me.
I elected to attend a water quality seminar in C'ville rather that go up to Tally for TWA. I'm not sure it was a wise move. Karen says that it was a good meeting there. All I got out of the Crawfordville event was more details on the way Leon Co and we ourselves are polluting our streams and -particularly- the Springs. Of course I got to say HEY to some people who matter .
I was reading a travel story from the early 19th century. The writes speaks of The Wakulla Spring being so clear that he could see the bottom at something like a hundred feet. People speak of drifting in their canoes on water so clear that it was as if they floted on air. Now most days they don't to run the glass bottom boats-nothing to see.
I have to message Lizzie and explain why I wasn't at TWA.
Pete has a great idea for the WWII History group. He would have us meet on Saturday afternoon once a month. That's good. Some of those old guys shouldn't be on the road after dark.
How did those guys my age get so OWLLD?!!
