You Have a Call From a Mr. Bush

I wish I was kidding, I really do

Have you heard about this new Caller ID spoofing? Apparently, you can use it to send someone a call from anyone you want, from George W. Bush to Liza Minelli. Of course, they're not really getting a call from them, but that's what their caller ID will tell them.

If you go on a special website, you can subscribe to the Caller ID spoofing, at varying rates per minute. Once subscribed, you can send a call to someone under the ID of anyone. What you do is type in the phone number of who you're calling, the name of whoever you want on the ID, your phone number, and the peron on the ID's phone number. After submitting, you receive a call, and then your phone will automatically call the person. While it is, of course, you, the ID will say whatever name you put it, and whatever number you put in.

Obviously, there's one drawback to using this: you have to know the famous person's number. Still, I think this is, in essence, an incredibly awful idea. What makes it exceptionally awful is that if the person calls the number their ID shows, they will reach that person, not who really called them. And therein lies the opportunity for some seriously illegal activities. I don't know about you, but I think this should be quietly gotten rid of before someone gets hurt.

I am sure there is hours of evil fun to be had with a service like that.

You're right though it probably should be illegal.

Illegal fun? Surely, you don't mean things like spoofing your impotent friend's caller ID with Dr. Ruth's number? Or using the DEA tipline for your stoner friends?

Who, honestly, would even THINK of something like that?

BRB...I have to make a call to Ted Nugent...from PETA

All the many uses...

I don't think that there is any effective way to but a stop to this, considering how you just gave it the publicity it needs and that it is an online activity.
