"friday five" Winter Wonderland

Yay! Glad you're bringing it back, danny. (and in case Mig catches this, I miss you bunches and bunches!)

1/ Upon finding the snow, what is your first thought?

What the fuck? Oh, no...it must be the end of the world! Aaaaaaaaahhhhh!

2/ What do you think you'll do differently because of the snow?

The kids and I would probably spend the day playing outside in the snow...we'd build a snowman, make snow angels, have a snowball fight, and make snow ice cream...
3/ What will you wear when you go outside?

Well, I don't really have much in the way of winter clothes...buuuut...I'd throw on some blue jeans and sneakers and dig Adrian's big, fluffy blue sweater out of the closet and put it on. I also have a denim jacket in the back of the closet, so I'd grab it too.

4/ How common/rare is this much snow?

Hahaha...for this island it's completely rare...from my meager googling skills I've found that the last time snow was reported on the island of Oahu was 1953...

5/ The snow also managed to cut services (power/telephone/internet/etc), how long can you make due?

I have an emergency kit prepared since we have to watch out for hurricanes here...it has most of the things I would need, but I don't have bottled water saved up, so that would be a problem. I should probably get some. I think it's fun to go with out power and all that for a day or two...but eventually I'm going to want to blowdry my hair and check my email..hehe

Either I got transported somewhere that snows or the earth has flipped.

No more complaining about how hot it is. I'll do a whole lot more walking. I've been to places where it snows, and I like it.

I have some winter wear that I bought for my trip the last time - a nice jacket, long johns, thermal socks maybe, good walking boots.

4/ How common/rare is this much snow?

Well, it never snows in Singapore.

Warm water may be a concern, but I guess I could always boil some if I wanted a bath. Other than that, I should be alright for a few days without power.

There's a few of the old crowd I miss greatly, and Mig is definetly one of them. She is an inspiration to everyone lucky enough to cross her path. If she see's this, Mig I miss you lots, and thanks for all the smiles you gave me, they are priceless.

Make sure I have sensible shoes on......I'm nice and toasty warm....and act like a child, though the last one I do on a daily basis anyway!

Erm...4 layers of clothes, a big coat, a wooly hat, a scarf and gloves.....I will look very sexy

It is very rare, we usually just get ice!

About ten mins without JU will be long enough! Hehe....no a good while I reckon, the snow will keep me amused for ages!

I'd be too shocked to even think...we hardly get snow in the desert...

I'd spend more time outside my house...just taking in the white scenery.. even joining in a snowball fight with the young ones who are around...lol

A rarely worn scarf neatly wrapped around my chin, mouth, nose, and ears...and of course lots of layered clothing...

We get snow every other year or so...so it's a huge treat for us around here...I know many ppl who get inundated with it hate it, but it's a beautiful thing to most of us.

Probably 3 days...we'd be fine food-wise because I tend to buy canned goods and there is also bottled water around..as much as I like to use it, I can do without internet...telephone would be hard to do without...we get our heat from gas, so we don't have to depend on electricity... as long as the gas didn't get interrupted, I'd be alright with a book in one hand and a cup of cocoa in the other...

2 This year clearing it off the driveway has become my responsibility, so apart from making sure that is done, nothing different for me.
3 That depends, if I'm just going out for a little while (like to clear the driveway) then jacket over whatever I happen to have on at the time. If I'm going out for longer (like to wander the fields for a few hours) then snowpants, boots, same jacket, hat gloves, mask, goggles, no skin exposed
4 A foot in a night is rare enough, but not unheard of. But thanks to the wonderful plow people here it would have to fall very quick and very close to the start of work for it to really stop anything. Slow the commute to work down some, sure, but we're crazy in this part of New York.
5 A week? Then water would probably become a problem, although since snow is basically water we might be able to use that. The generator should only provide power for a few days, but by then the perishable food that we can't just freeze should have been eaten. And with that much snow around the outdoors is a giant freezer anyways. Then factor in the herds of deer that wander through the front yard, haha, might last until summer. Course, it's doubtful power would be out for more then a day, would have to be real bad weather for that.

I figured some of you didn't get much snow and thought you might like to imagine you did, like some of us live with Hope you all enjoyed this and there should be another one next week (and if your lurking around your still welcome to answer)

1/ first thoughts? "$%@&##%@!@, I should've bought a snowblower by now."

2/ altered actions? Will get to work later because of either (a) need to clear driveway, (b) need to wait for snowplow to clear road, (c) idiot drivers who go 15 MPH on plowed highways, or (d) all of the above.

3/ clothing? The usual for this time of year, heavy winter jacket + scarf. I don't normally tread in the actual snow much, only to/from the car.

4/ frequency of snow? Not unusual, often happens at least once a year. (Minnesota, you know.)

5/ ability to make do? We got books, we got food, we got flashlights, we got neighbors, we got a grocery store 500 yards away. No problem.

Start the car about 15 minutes before going anywhere.

I’ve been slowly creating a cold weather wardrobe, the latest addition is tall boots, so I’ll probably wear those. And a warm coat, scarf and gloves. And the regular clothes, of course.

A foot at once happens maybe once or twice per winter, maybe a little more. Just snowed last night in fact.

Ah, now that’s the real kicker, isn’t it? We never seem to keep much food in the larder. Plus it will get cold in here pretty quick. And the worst part…no internet? I might be able to last 5 minutes. Actually I do like to read books so I could do that. So the cold would get to us pretty quickly. No alternative heat source.

When I was growing up in the mountains of Colorado my mother always made sure we had a supply of food in the freezer in case we got snowed in. She usually kept enough food in the freezer to feed a family of 6 quite well for weeks. She would freeze everything from meat to bread to gallons of milk. Worked pretty well, actually – although in 14 years we only got snowed in once for 3 days. But it was nice knowing it was there.

Cordelia: 'Back' is such a relative term. I'd say this means I think friday fives were fun and that I'll try to post one every friday (unless someone else wants to take a turn, in which case they should tell me to stop so that we don't have two on the same friday).

MMM, lets see, when we had the hurricane last year, a whole week with out power, survived that....well...., let's just say, since it would be COLD...one day is all I could tolerate!
