Various software news..

Just a head's up

Here are some freeware programs that are very popular but don't tend to get much news made on them:

CursorXP. www.cursorxp.com. This program takes your Windows mouse cursors to the next level. It's free, no spyware, and very cool.

LogonStudio. www.logonstudio.com. This program lets you change your Windows XP logon screen. It hasn't been updated in a long while but it does the job very well and it's free.

IconDeveloper. www.icondeveloper.com. I use this program all the time to make icons. What it does is let you take images (PNG, JPG, BMP whatever) and quickly turn them into Windows icons. Even works from the Windows shell.

Having tried LogonStudio, I find it to be an interesting piece of software. However, while it's nice to get a different logon screen, I find it to be lacking ever since support was dropped. The fact that it's lacking now makes it hard for theme authors to make that idea they had into reality. With some limitations in how the bitmaps and icons work in conjunction with LogonStudio, it makes realizing people's vision for a theme a problem. These limitations and problems are what hinders some people's progress in creating the theme that they had set on paper.

It's sad that LogonStudio isn't supported anymore. And it really does has potential. But with some bugs and limitations plaguing the software, it yearns for some love and attention from authors who want a software that is still being updated for fixing bugs and adding features. There's an option to help this software. But I'm not aware if there are any proprietary codes or hooks that may be put to bad use.

I agree with Citizen sixshot that the program is "just too plain". It is however better than nothing and sure beats the old standard windows logon, but I too feel the program needs more options. It sure would be fun to be able to get more creative!

There are fans of LogonStudio out there. I'm one of them. When it was an active project I was quite excited about seeing it polished up. I was very sad when support for it dropped off, and have kept an eye out for it to become an active project again. I don't know if you are fishing to see if people are interested in these projects Frogboy, but I for one am more than willing to jump up on the LogonStudio band wagon with Mark Snyder and sixshot.

Hold that LogonStudio bandwagon for me ...I love having different logons and would appreciate an option for random selection, as BootSkin has

To be honest, I just used LogonStudio to apply the themes, having learnt the language myself. It took a little reading, but it's well worth it for the things it allows you to do.

It's already there, on the Options page.
