Unstoppable civ?

I was playing a game recently when a group called the dread-lords appeared. At first i wasnt to scared until i saw the other civs dropping like flies. i also saw that the dread lords were producing wonders at an alarming pace! this is supposed to be a minor civ!
then, it happend. at least 25 dreadnaughts swarmed in, while my best ship was still a battle cruiser. i was destroyed in 3 minutes. are the dread lords unstoppable? also i saw when they first appeared that a info bar popped up and said if i had spent some more $ on espionage i could have prevented the dread lords from even becoming a minor race! any suggestions

They are powerful, especially if they appear at the beginning of the game. They are only a minor race beacuse the engine treats anything not in the six standard races to be minor.

There is a way to stop them after they have been deployed. If you can build three or more starbases with maxed out military/defence in a single sector, your ships should be powerful enough to start skeet-shooting their dreadnoughts.

You will still need enough ships to pull this off, but it should be possible. While the Dread Lords replace ships as quickly as they are destroyed, your ships will can begin to gain veterency levels, and become more powerful.

To address this facet, the game checks your active espionage spending with all major races when the last in the series of Dread Lord/Dark Arnor events comes up, and if it's high enough the event ends with the destruction of the cult trying to revive them instead.
