All international services have been disrupted.

TVL Customer Information. All International Services have been disrupted since Sat 15th Jan 2005. Further advice will be given. TVL.

TVL is our sole telecommunications company. And that is the message they've been sending on all mobile phones throughout our little country Vanuatu. What it means is that since last Saturday, we cant call or receive calls from overseas and neither could we email or receive emails. The internet is now working obviously. But not the phones or fax machines nor even the ATM machines for foreign currencies which can be a pain for the average tourist visiting the fire isalnds.

All local calls can be made. The problem is as soon as we want to make an international call.

What happened? Apparently a satellite is fucked, and that's the root of the problem. What are they gonna do about it? Well we hve no idea. They keep passing on the radio what the problem is, but they're not saying what they'll do about it. At least the internet is working now.

Vanuatu isnt the only country that's literally cut out of the world because of that incident. New Caledonia too seems to be in the same position. I dont know about countries in the rest of the Pacific.

This is really annoying for businesses. I hope it doesnt last for long...

It's funny how easily we can be isolated. At least you get isolated on your island paradise, instead of some frozen snowy place And since you've got internet you could use some of the online phones to call people that you otherwise couldn't. Or email, instant message, blog, etc. I guess your not really isolated after all

Technology is a wonderful thing, isn't it. Once in awhile we are reminded that, while technology does enrich our lives, it is a fickle friend at best. Even more fickle can be those responsible for identifying problems and correcting them. If all they do is worry about who's at fault, or what someone else was supposed to do, things only get worse.

My only real advise to you would be, begin to think beyond the comforts and conveniences that are (hopefully temporarily) lost. Think about what you can do with what is left, and when this has passed, make sure you never take the technology for granted again. Always have a plan for what you will do the next time.

Hang in there!!!
