Could Having a Miscarriage be Illegal???
Delegate John A. Cosgrove of Virginia has introduced a bill to the Virginia House of Delegates, proposing that the Code of Virginia be amended. The amendment would make it a crime for a woman who has a miscarriage to wait more than 12 hours before notifying authorities of the fact that she had a miscarriage.
So my first question is, What kind of a moron is this man??? This idiot wants to make it a CLASS 1 MISDEMEANOR for a woman who has gone through not only the physical but excruciating emotional pain of losing her child, to wait for more than half a day to report it to the authorities. Let's forget, for a second, that unless the child's father is a member of the authorities, this is none of the authorities' business, and just focus on the fact that maybe, just possibly, a woman who has just lost her baby will have more pressing issues on her mind in the 12 hour period immediately after the permanently scarring event than calling the local sheriff and saying "I just had a miscarriage, just thought you'd like to know."
So, then, if unreported miscarriage is to be a Class 1 Misdemeanor, let us look at some of the crimes that it will be joining:
Statutory Rape
Arson (if the value within the property is less than 200 dollars)
Stalking
Carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
Threatening a public school employee while on school property
Bomb Threat (made by someone under the age of 15)
Does unreported miscarriage seem out of place to anyone else??? To go back to my Sesame Street days, one of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn't belong.
I don't even understand why this man feels compelled to make this the amendment that he proposes. Are there absolutely no other problems in the state of Virginia that he can take on??? Has he achieved his goal of building such a utopia that finally, after curing all other societal ills, he has arrived at miscarriages, and how they can be turned into a crime?
Let's make unreported zit popping illegal. Let's make unreported shaving illegal. Let's make it illegal for me to masturbate without keeping a detailed tally of when I did it, where I did it, how long it took me, and exactly how much reproductive fluid was secreted, to be faxed to the proper authorities within 12 hours of me performing the act. That makes sense, doesn't it?
After all, there's no other problems that we could turn our attention to. It's not like we're at war, or the economy's struggling, or we have a high murder rate, or anything like that.
