...how pathetic and sad I must seem to other people. Because of my hobby/pastime....my passion for knitting.

I found a knitting supply store in my area and I got so excited over it I called not only the store to tell them I was excited but my mother, my husband and my mother-in-law too.

This store is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for me...now I won't have to make do with whatever WalMart or the generic craft store carries, I can go hog wild with mohair and wool/cotton blends and variageated colors and chunky and sportweight...and they even have hemp blend yarns!  I've been dying to try that!  Speaking of dyeing, they have yarns that you can dye yourself...Koolaide makes a good yarn dye, apparently. And patterns, they have patterns galore for all kinds of cool stuff; more needles than you can shake a stick at..circular ones and double pointed ones (necessary for socks and beanies), bamboo ones...beaded stitch markers so's you don't lose your place, row counters.....I could go on and on.

I'm going to be like a kid in a candy store.  I'm going to go check it out this week with $20 in my pocket...than, when Dave's pay increase shows up on the 15th of the month I'm going back with my $100 allowance and fully expect to come out of there weighed down with yarn and supplies, totally broke.

Broke, but happy. 

I just realized how sad that sounds.....

As the son of a sewing addict, I can only plead that you don't lead your kids into the store for more than 20 minutes!!

I remember way way way too many times as a kid being led to a sewing section of some shop.. and then loosing my Mom... only to see her again an hour or two later hunkered down trying to carry some hundred pounds of fabric and wool. She did teach me how to sew, and chrochet... and oddly enough that's been kinda popular with the women..... I still can't figure that out....

I'm pretty sure if you wanted I could get you a HUGE and comprehensive list of all the sewing shops in Indiana... Most notorious would be Sheep Street, a local shop that any knitter/fabric conosour would be hard pressed to not spend their entire wallet at..... hehe

That's kinda what I was thinking too.  There's so much strife around, so much pressure....and I have found something that relaxes me and provides me with an almost meditation-like experience, gives me a finished product to show for my efforts, and...well I'm good at it.

Ooooh no!  This store is going to be MY haven.  If I have my way, my kids will never see the inside of it.....unless my daughter gets bitten by the knitting bug and wants to go spend her money there, that is.  I'm not planning to taking my husband there either...we share everything else, but i want this, like I said, to be MY gig.

Knitting stores in Indiana (Vincennes area) are pretty scarce.  There's a lot of general craft stores, and they carry basic knitting supplies...but I'm looking for a specialized store specifically for knitters.

On a totally different note...there was a murder over on East Reel in Vincennes the week before Christmas.  I dunno if you recall where that is....but some dude bashed his buddy's skull in with a hammer.  That town is going downhill fast.....

Hey Dharma!

My mom does a LOT of knitting as well, and I love it--I get scarves and bags and the what not--I've convinced her to try to make some crazy stuff that I've seen, and she ends up having to make tons because everyone loves them.

She buys a lot of her yarn online--I'll try to find out the address for you because she says it is cheaper that way!

My grandmother was an avid knitter and crocheter...She been gone over 40 years and I still have sweaters that she made for me. Its a great hobby and could be very profitable...enjoy and good luck!

I work for a major fabric and craft retailer and knitting (needle arts in general) has had a huge resurgance in the last few years. We have guys who come in and buy yarn and fabric for quilting...even show their stuff at fairs. I have read about NFL players who knit in their spare time because it is relaxing so you are in great company and based on the fact that my store is constantly out of yarn, it is becoming more and more popular...KNIT ON!!!

Knitting is becoming "cool" again.  I am somewhat hoping that a lot of the trends (except polyester and insane patterns) from the 70's return.  There are a lot of crafts that have pretty much died out over the years, and it would be neat to see a rediscovery of them.  There is even a "Knitty Gritty" show on DIY (they were making MP3 player covers on yesterday's show).  http://www.diynet.com/diy/na_knitting/article/0,2025,DIY_14141_3429577,00.html

I think knitting is very cool and hope to take it up some day.  My grandma is a fantastic knitter and still partakes in the lost art of knitting socks.  They are the most awesome socks you could possibly have!  I have a pair that finally got holes after about 15yrs and she made us all new ones this year.  She made me a green and white pair that I am going to flaunt in front of my MSU fanatical in-laws this weekend

My granny was too.  She lived in an age where you had to make do or you did without, so she knitted and re-knitted sweaters and socks and gloves and mittens and such.  I want to try socks, and I'm going to give my first pair a try with some cheap acrylic yarn so I can get the hang of it without using up all my good 100% wool yarn...I can always wear them as slipper socks!


Karma: I checked out the link, and I like the mouse cover and iPod cosy!  I have a patterns for a PDA and cell phone cosy that isn't too hard to make....and I found a pattern for a 'Mr Bean' bear that I want to have a go at too. 


Varoom: I know!  All of a sudden I'm cool!  I knitted a rainbow kerchief for my daughter, and she wore it to school yesterday...and came home with requests from 2 of her friends for the same thing! 


All I can say is that knitting is awesome, and Jill, if we lived closer to each other I'd be happy to teach you!  We could have 'Stitch 'n' Bitch' mornings...coffee, chat and knitting.  What else could a girl need?!

Then I'm almost scared to tell you about Sheep Street... lol It would be a decent drive from where your at (it's about 2 hours from Vincennes at least, though I'm not sure how far away you are from there...) and I'm pretty sure if you wen't it'd be an all day trip... I even know right where they get some of their wool at... the sheep flock right across the street from me... lol

Though I don't know too much about the store personally... She's been making me some of those for years now., and are THE best for winter... nothing warmer than wool socks And aye, Vincennes has always been a sad town. From what I learned in College.. with my partail stupidity of being in the drugscene a bit, I learned that the town is a HUGE Crank town... Luckly I NEVER touched that stuff... I went more for the natural drug... lol So it really doesn't surprise me to hear that about the town =/

I'm about 2 hours away from Vincennes, in the opposite direction (west).  If you take Hwy 50 west and drive for oh, 130 miles, you'll run right into where I am!

That's awesome.  I'm no novice either, I've been doing this since I was 8 or 9.... so for an experienced knitter likt your mom to say that it has everything she needs...well that place really must be something!  I'm doing okay with the sock knitting thus far, thanks...but I'll let you know if I run into problems.

Oh yeah.  It's pretty bad for that now.  My mother in law said there was a meth lab in a camper across the street from her house that got taken down a couple of months ago.  She called to ask dave and I why she would keep finding half empty bottles of drain cleaners and other nasty stuff in the street.....we told her she probably had some idiot making crank close by, and sure enough, there was.  In the 10 years that I've been visiting there regularly, even I've seen a decline in the quality of life there.  Washington (dunno if you recall where that is) is getting just as bad.

How are you, anyway?  How's it going with your girlfriend?

Well... I guess for the quick update I should say I'm girlfriendless again... No pity now!! I'm used to this so I handle break up's really well =P

Other than that, I'm spending this month going to Bally's, trying to get into at least some semblance of shape again, because early Febuary supposedly I'm due to ship out to California for my BT. I decided to enlist since no job's are coming my way at all. (and I busted my ass and tried DAMN hard to get one =/)

Oddly, the recruiters ALL pushed me towards Air Force. I wanted to go Navy like my Grandpa According to them though, due to my ASVAB testing's they want me in the airforce. I don't know how they get to that but I can't complain too much... I've always loved the idea of flying, and though chances are I'd never be a pilot for them, I'd at least get to be around them, and could get a chance to maybe some day earn enough skills to get to pilot for recreational reasons
