Who Are You???

Just thinkin'

So I'm starting a new project, and it has forced me to think about the nature of the self.

What is the self? Is it body, mind, or soul? Is it a combination of the three? Or maybe just two of the three.

I would love to hear any thoughts.

There is no self, we are all someone elses dream. Hopefully a good dream, but maybe we're a nightmare

All we are is dust in the wind man... just dust in the wind.

We are the end result (so far) of a billion + years of natural selection. We are the Universe that has become aware of it's self.

I think...

We are all.  We are the trinity of Body, Mind and soul.  After all, did not God make us in his own image?

I guess it depends what philosopher you believe in. Descartes thought that all of them were seperate. Suzanne Langer thought that they all had to exist together. Plato was just an asshole....Read some of my earlier articles...I started my blog as a philosophy class project. My first 15 articles are strictly on philosophy. That could maybe help out.....

Hmm...red pill or blue pill...

We are the end result (so far) of a billion + years of natural selection. We are the Universe that has become aware of it's self.

So then...are you saying we are like an universal soul?

We are all. We are the trinity of Body, Mind and soul. After all, did not God make us in his own image?

My only problem with including the body is that your body can change, as in be made larger or smaller or different in some way, without the self changing...It least in my opinion, the self doesn't change.

I'll check them out.

I personally think it's a combination of mind and soul, although I'm not quite sure of the connection...I had thought about it a couple of years ago but I've forgotten...I think I'm leaning towards the soul taking precedence though...

From a Buddhist POV, there is no 'self', no 'I'.

I think we are just a form of energy. When we die, the energy will redisperse into the earth. Parts of us that were will go here and there and around.

I think, the people that we find to love as humans share some similar energy from somewhere else from another time. That's why we are attracted to some people, naturally, and not others. We get along with some, and not others.

When people we love die, their energy goes into the cylce again. We might even get some of it...

That's my theory.

I agree wholeheartedly, if by the above post you mean that we're all just "dust in the wind"

Is "dust in the wind" a physical thing? I'm just unsure as to how you mean it...

I'm just kidding. I couldn't help but think of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure when I read this question.

The part when Bill (or Ted, I don't know which) says that, "...we're all just dust in the wind"

He was quoting the Kansas song:

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind.
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

[Now] Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy.

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind.

Hmm...good then...I feel better now...

What a great movie too, by the way. Keanu Reeves's greatest performance.

I think it's all three, but the body (and I include mind in this) will die, but the soul will live on.

BTW, the topic title reminded me of those GNARLY Nintendo commercials such as this one: http://www.samus.co.uk/zero_mission/tv_ads.shtml#
