"Hand-made" = crap!

I'm just wondering why most people seem to appreciate the fact that something is "hand-made."

All that means to me is that it's probably riddled with defects.

Most of the time I suppose it depends on what the item is and who it was made by. But I disagree with your assumption that it means it is "riddled with defects".

If something is hand-made then the person making it can actually be aware of any flaws that go into it. Whereas those flaws can often slip through the cracks with machine assembly. I also think that something that is hand-made means a lot more.

As one who knits, sews and paints for other people, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that hand-made does NOT equal crap in my book.

All of my hand-made items are crafted with love....they are designed and created specially for individual people.  A lot of thought goes into what I make...and there are no defects.

I do agree with a certain part of both of your posts. When it comes to certain items, like the things that you might be sewing, the above quote is something to consider. When you're buying something like that, little flaws might even be considered to add "character" to the item.

Regardless of the quality, I think most people appreciate hand-made items because the person that made it cared enough to spend the time to make whatever it is.

Yeah, I saw this Picasso the other day... amazingly crappy. It preyed on my mind as I drove home in my car that has many hand-tooled parts which have lasted longer than the factory originals. "Why are handmade things such crap," I pondered, while sitting on my 30 year-old, handmade wooden couch. After a while I shrugged, turned on a 30 year-old, handmade light, picked up a 100 year-old hand-bound book, and forgot this startling revelation till now. Thanks for reminding me to avoid that garbage and get some good, quality China imports at Wal-Mart.
