Skinner reward proposal #2

Skinner reward proposal #2

Okay, how about this concept for rewarding skinners:

WinCustomize starts running regular contests in which the top 10 skins in terms of downloads by users who are also subscribers get a percentage of the revenue we receive from new subscriptions.  It would be done for only certain sections so that we could highlight a given section for that period (and we could even have multiple sections featured in a given time).

So at the end of the 3 months, we would tally the # of downloads that were done by subsribers (best way to avoid download stuffing since it's hard to "stuff the ballot" that way).

So the top skin would get something like $200. Second place $150, third $100. Fourth $50. Fifth $25. Sixth through 10th $20. This would depend on the # of subscribers of course but it would be in this ballpark.

A given skin author could make the top 5 skins though and collect it all. So it would favor quality skins and quantity.

So let's say we started the first one in January and focused it on WindowBlinds and Iconpackager. The following one might focus on DesktopX and CursorXP. And so forth.

What do you guys think?

ack, talk about not being mozilla frinedly editor. Let's try that again.

Okay here is what we've decided to do.

1st: No contest will satisfy everyone. Some people need to recognize that in the real world that perfect is the enemy of good.

2nd: We are going to hold a WindowBlinds test contest that will begin probably next week and end in early December (first Tuesday in December probably). It will be based on downloads of individual skins. IF someone were to make a bunch of incredible skins, they could walk away with several of the top 10 prizes.

3rd: Any skinner can participate.

4th: Only original skins will count. I.e. Longhorn skins or ports will not be counted.

5th: The rankings will be dtermined by # of WC Subscriber downloads. They're the ones paying the bill on this so their favorites will determine it.

6th: A portion of new subscriptions in that time will be set aside to be split amongst the winners. Based on September's new subscriptions that means around $500 to be split amongst the top 10 (probably most of that amongst the top 3, we'll decide the exact splitting shortly).

7th: If this goes well, this will be an on-going thing where we highlight different sections at different months - sometimes doing multiple ones. 8th: Our goal here is to encourage people to subscribe to the site, encourage more good quality skins to be made, and have some fun.

And yet it seems you've found the middle ground between perfect and good............. which is excellent!

AeroLunaLonghorn Splash

Shucks, it was going to be a very different skin too. Since it was part Luna, I didn't have to skin half of it. Since it was part Aero, nothing had to be really visible. And since it was part Longhorn, I didn't have to worry about the bugs. Because, it was bound to have them. I already had it half finished too. Oh well..hmm maybe thats not too different from most of the stuff here.

Now here's an idea - I want to see someone do a multi-OS skin. Something with aspects of all those OSs. I think a prize should be given for the best, usable bits-of-existing-OSs skin!

Maybe a booby-prize - a year's subscription to Farmer's Weekly or something..

(of couse, no-one would ever use it...)
