Clear text around icons and fonts on desktop view - HELP

Hey I'm new at this but I've just popped in a new desktop pic and window stuffy (Windows XP) and the text and icons used to be clear type (no background colour showing). Now I can't get rid of the desktop colour. What am I doing wrong. Does this make sense?

Any ideas?

run chkdsk /x/f c:
it will resent registry
reboot
every thing will be ok then

right click My Computer, go to properties, then Advanced tab.
Under Performance, click the settings button. Towards the bottom of the list is a checkbox, Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop. Check that box and apply. That should fix it.
