Need advice and comments about a name and style change.

Need advice and comments about a name and style change.

Hello all.

I have the feeling that styl-x is dead. I get enough customers, thats not the problem however it isn't the business style I am looking for. I am already working on a new design for styl-x and I was also thinking about a new name. Lately I get alot of customers that want to order 'brand identity'.
This is what I want my new company to be focused on, but I also want to keep the skinning part of the business.
I already got a few designers and coders that would be intrested in participating in this new project and they are feeling the same way about it, I just want to have some second opinions.

This is the idea: (and believe me, I WILL sue you if you steal it )

The new name will be: SKINDICATE
Our slogan will be: Because the extra mile is our standard.

What do you think?
If you have any better ideas, feel free to post them!

too bad you couldn't use "the skindicate" or "the skyndicate"... could have had a motto of "we'll make you a graphic you can't refuse!".

Haven't got a reply yet from d-russ and a reply from renato regarding the skyndicate one.

...is it just me or does "skyndicate" tend to read like "sky-n-dicate" on a quick glance?

I know skindicate sounds good, but I don't think skyndicate is worth pursuing IMHO...

maybe skyn-dicate? Nah...

Anyhow, if it came to a TM, then a "sound-a-like" is just as much a problem as an identical spelling as "Mike Roe Soft" found out recently...

Yeah, you might be right on that one sput but I just don't think that I couldn't order the domain name skindicate.com because there was 1 single suite released under that name in the year 2001.

Style....I strongly doubt 'Skindicate' would be permissable.

From memory the original was the first collaborative entity in skinning, pre-dating 'Community Skin'...and comprised the 3 most prominent artists of the time.

Though Deven [Dmer] isn't seen around of late [I must hunt him down], and Russ [Dangeruss] and Renato [treetog] are both busy with commercial works, all three are still revered [as they should be] within the community.

Using that name would be akin to calling your website 'skinz.org' and painting it brown...

Styl skinner - I don't doubt that you could register the domain name (assuming it's available - I've not checked) - but, if the previous use were demonstrated and the prior users decided to argue about it then you could be accused of "cyber-squatting", which I think tends to mean the domain is awarded to those who can demonstrate the prior call on it - at least by most registration organisations these days.

...so you could get started as a business and then find yourself "evicted" from your shop...as it were.

TM and company names are a very tricky business in the international cyber-world if you're aiming for any sort of proffesional basis. Best to avoid obvious potential problems from the start would be my advice.

Sput...it's  somewhat 'more' than that.  An established use of a name....with history attached, whether registered or not ....subsequently being used by another person within the same industry/circles would be professional suicide for the new user...

jafo - agreed...that was the gist of what I was trying to advise, but put more succinctly, and forcefully

"Yeah, you might be right on that one sput but I just don't think that I couldn't order the domain name skindicate.com because there was 1 single suite released under that name in the year 2001."

Styl Skinner: The Polymer suite was not just one single suite. It was the first mega suite ever made. It was the most popular suite ever made. It took all the first spots of Skins.org for around 2 weeks, breaking all download records till the end of Skins.org. Nobody never did something similar till today. That suite have ORIGINAL skins for over 35 different applications. Over one thousand hours of very hard were spent on that suite, 3 overall screenshot must be made to be able to present all the skins to the public. Something that I am very proud of it, so please don't try to make it look pathetic, because it is not!

As i told you in my reply to you, The Skindicate name was originaly created just for that suite, by Dangeruss and me.

I will not try to block or fight you if you continue with this idea, so do what you want. I will be just sorry. Again, as I told you in my reply, since in your business, creativity is your product, I am wondering what you will offer to your clients, if even the name you choose for your company is not original.

Since you are posting all your opinions about that on this thread, I decided to reply you here too.

Renato....I think my post #32 covers it nicely....

Professional suicide is rather terminal and not a great 'first step' in business....

The work/s the Skindicate released were, and still are significant examples of the skinner's art, so the name is pretty-well established in permanence...

Howdy! Thought I would offer my .02 cents worth here....as this name &
slogan just sort of wandered by......

The SkinFlints - Affordable, Sharp & Stylish, Just For You!

Ah, yeah, I know, kind of corny, but hey, it gets the point across!

Have a Blessed Day!

I can understand that the name was used before, like I also already said before, I wasn't aware of that fact when I came up with the name.

The name is registered at several skinning sites however most of those accounts are renamed to other names (like pixtudio etc.)

Als I wonder how many people know that skindicate has been used. I think that only the users that has been arround for a long time might remeber it.

Why not run a poll at WC to ask how many people remember the name

Like: What is the skindicate:

The new name of wincustomize,
A colaboration between treetog and Dangeruss
The new name of styl-x.com
A colaboratin between Jafo and Frogboy

Styl....I think the only politic thing to do is to choose another name....

Styl - I wouldn't hold You very high anymore if You used that name. It would be just plain wrong and a slap right into the face of three great skinners.

I like those names.
Anyway...
Since you are getting into the field of identity making, I would really try to do some research before coming up with a name and slogan for the company.

It should be a name related to the business you want to specifically go into and what you will be focusing on as well as something that flows and is memorable. It can also be something that you personally like or maybe a location:
Washington Identity
Apple Pie Designs
GUI Marketing

Strangely though, you might actually need to hire someone to come up with your own name and identity.

Hope that helps...
And I agree with the others about Skindycate... plus it probably really wouldn't work for your company new venture anyway. GUI design can be more than just graphic image work but also placement of button and locations of items... and identity marketing also is more than just making a new skin.

No offense to companies out there who have the word 'skin' in them but if you noticed most who get into what you want to do do not have the word 'skin' even if that is what they mostly do.

At least from what I researched.

Styl skinner - in law, it wouldn't matter if no one remembers the prior use as long as it could be demonstrated, which if can be. The advice we're giving is that useing a name with established prior use in the same field as you intend to use it for is not just "a bad idea", it's open to legal action.

Now, they may not decide to do anything, but you can't start out in business using a name and knowing that at some point you may have to change all your promotional matterial etc and be liable for compensation - that would just be silly.

Unless you get the official nod from them (and it would need to be in writting I would suggest), then you have to Drop it and move on - and the tone of the messages here indicates you're not going to get that authorisation.

Dangeruss said he didn't care and I could use it but you guys are right, if the other members have problems with it I will just not use it.... too bad.

It will remain styl-x. I came up with the name skindicate when I was talking with a friend and we were found it a great name, he already wanted to order it but I just wanted to know some second opinions about it, then found this out.
The new design we made will be used for styl-x as wel as the new style and the new way we handle projects.

Thats all, get back to work
