The GUI Olympics: One month...

The GUI Olympics: One month...

I'm not speaking for Stardock. I'm speaking for myself.  I'm pretty disappointed with the GUI Olympics so far.

Not so much the entires. There are some outstanding entries so far.  But the quantity so far has been lacking. Not in terms of # of skins per skinner but the number of skinners.

Winamp: 11 skins. Most of which are classic.

IconPackager: 7 icon packages.

WindowBlinds: 45

The people participating are doing some great work. But I'm becoming a bit concerned about the number of skinners participating. Are there a lot of entries still in development? I hope so. Because I got all kinds of emails from people asking for another GUI Olympics. I didn't want to do one. It's a lot of extra work for me and Pat. But we went ahead and did it and managed to get a bunch of big name sponsors this time.

What I'd like to know is how many of you reading this have submissions that are pending still.  Because if we end up with the contest only having say 15 to 20 people total participating, then I'd say it was not worth it. Where are all the other skinners. Where are the Winamp skinners? Where are the WB skinners? Where are the Icon authors? Are they still working on stuff or is there just not that much interest in contests like these?

/me thinks some of this crap is funny.

I would venture to say (and I could be wrong) that most of the so called BIG GUNS have had their stuff rejected at one time or another. I know some that have. Its called a learning experience. If your blind works most likely it won't be rejected. It still could be as I've seen that happen before, but rare.

So quit crying foul or pouting poor little me and learn and try harder. If need be (and your a male) go into the closet and yell and cry and come back and try again.

/me got a skin into the GUIO with just a pea-shooter and some bare faced cheek to try something odd....and a willingness by the mods to let me look silly when the other gun slingers pull their 6-shooters

I'm hoping the more serious skin I've been working on for the GUIO makes it past moderation...the problem is that everytime someone adds something amazing (^^Gabriel!! ), I have to keep thinking of ways to try and make this better so it's taking AGES!

I think all the good skins should have been held back till the last few days....OR, all the ones that aren't so good should be let in near the end when everyone has already decided on a winner so it doesn't matter j/k

All have their own taste which is why any skin entered is a potential winner

Well, "all" I have left to do for my 2nd attempt at a submission now are:

Scroll bars
Column headings
Treeview +/-
Combo box
...a few other controls and misc easy bits,

...and the biggies....

Toolbar icons
Dialogue animations

Yikes...

I'd also really like to have the menu separator bug fixed, which seems to be an issue in WB and I'd like to include a title bar animation if only I could think of something that would fit the theme...I'm wishing I was in a team now as theres so much to do and so little time!

Note particularly the skin submission that crashed my shell.... [both Explorer and LiteSTEP]....needless to say such 'goofs' have to be weeded out...

No offense Jafo, but you know that the problem mentioned above is a bug in windowblinds. This is not my fault. No one recognized that bug. The bug occurs when windowblinds creates a extra uis file when one creates a subskin. Therefore two uis files are created. If windowblins installs a skin using the partial uis, then all hell breaks loose. This bug was mentioned in another post and I offered the suggestion to fix it. I also fixed the bug on April 3 and waited patiently for it to be posted. The was no lack of quality in the skin, no denial, and no moderation.

In reference to suggestions that my skin was moderated or denied. Please speak with knowledge. My skin was not the common grey and black skin and I thought that the contest was looking for originality. My skin was very different and clean. I had skinned parts that none of the premium skins had done before. I don't think that any of the GUI submissions had even skinned this part. The part I am referring to is the All Programs button. Also, I asked Brad to look at my skin on April 4 and he claimed he was too busy. Since then, I've seen two or three skins being posted. Strange claim for someone who is so busy that they are chatting in Stardock and complaining that there aren't enough skins being submitted.

But, since I have answered in the positive to these former suggestions, I do not think that my skin will be fairly judged. Maybe this was the intent behind the disregard. So, I will gratiously withdraw it from the competition. Thank you all for your flames and your cruel disregards for my submission. Maybe, I'll post it here at WC so everyone can see it and tear it apart as I am sure many will do. I didn't really want to enter it in a competition anyway. I make skins for the pure enjoyment of it. And, a small prize is nothing for the time I spent making this skin. I was just trying to show support to Brad, the competition and the skinning community. But, you can all view the disregard at a later date. And judge it yourselves. Thank you.

Oh yeah, and thanks for finally posting my skin at the GUI with no mention in the windowblind library submissions, and for posting it halfway down the new submissions list with no windowblind icon. Talk about fair play. sheesh. Now, how can I d-elete it from the competition? There is no d-elete button at WC or GUI, only a update button.
Thank you.

Oh...stop complaining...and remember this is voluntary effort/s by a number of Site Admins....who take the time to carefully vet the submissions....more so than normal general uploads.

I fixed your original skin on my computer, not you.

I've been doing this a while, you know.

What I/we needed was for your submission to be 'safe' for Joe Public....as it's initial upload was NOT.

Jafo, I don't want to get into it with you. Our initial interaction was not very nice, and that has long since passed with much appreciation of the way you have since treated me in the community here.

But, if you remember, I resubmitted the skin, after I fixed the windowblind error, and you verified that the error was fixed. I am sorry if I wasted your time. But, to avoid further drama and distractions to the competition and the community, and to avoid the certain flames as have already occurred, I ask you to please remove the skin. I am sorry that windowblinds messed up my submission and I apologize for my lack of patience in the matter. All of which will not fair well on me. Just remove it please. Thank you.

Geesh....Do we have to give your ball back too?

Sorry, I shouldn't tease as you're obviously upset for some reason, but why is beyond me. The submissions appear on the list in the order they were submitted it seems, not the order they pass moderation. There seems nothing on this thread to cause such a reaction (from the outside)...I wonder why you're so convinced that everyone is out to get you that you don't want to play any more?

Nothing is plain sailing, I respect Jafo and the other admins who are involved for taking the time to do this, If they didn't stop "problems" in their tracks they will have alot more than 1 person to deal with, having numerous complaints on how a single skin crashed this that and the other or how parts don't work where others look odd blah blah blah
