Can't remove a fence in Fences 5.04

I upgraded to latest version, and I can't remove/delete a fence anymore from the desktop. Already did the uninstall/purge process but problem remains.

using Windows 11 latest version. any updates ? this is an old bug, don't know why it still exists. would be nice to have an interface that allows to manage all fences, instead of relying on the "X" to remove a fence.

I don't really underatnd what you mean about the "X" thing. I don't see that. To remove a fence, you should be able to right click the fence and select remove fence from the drop down menu.

this "X" that shows to remove fence, but nothing happens

Oh, I see that now. I have my fences locked, so that's why the x is not showing.

Have you tried moving your mouse over the text that shows in your your screenshot after clicking the "x" and click on it? You have to do that, as that's an added feature so you can't accidently delete any fences, I think.

My previous answer should also work.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, I can not reproduce your issue on my system. Need more information on your system.

  1. Windows 11 full version numbers. Use Winver.exe.
  2. There is a new Fences 5.05 Beta out, please try this version. Report back.

Thank you.

yes, of course. tried also thru the right click menu, no dice. did the workaround asked (uninstall, purge, etc...) did not work. this problem exists since version 4, so should be something known by now.

can you point me to the beta? don't think it's open to all.

If you have Fences 5. The beta should also appear in your account product page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products

did not work. I uninstalled current version 5.04, purged using the purge bat available, rebooted, installed the beta version and it does not work.

once I create a fence, I can't delete it anymore. in fact, clicking on the 'remove fence' or 'configure fence' or even 'rename fence' nothing happens. (I can rename if I click on the name of the fence though)

does it generate any log I can share here?

Something is blocking Fences from working properly. Do you have 360 total Security installed or any other application that also install its own desktop organizer that might conflict with Fences?

not really. the only security sw I have on top of windows is malwarebytes.  it's really weird, fences works perfectly, all functions. I can open the app (searching on start menu). configure it, works nicely

I just can't delete a fence. seems the upper left menu on the fence does nothing (tried all submenus there, not even the "configure fences" open the applet)

where does it store the info on a fence? is it registry based? or stored elsewhere? can I do it outside Fences?

tested in the sandbox, it worked. when asked to delete a fence, it brought this dialog, which does not appear in the original environment (the sandbox ran in the same machine I had the problem)

did the cleanboot, per link above (created a new account) and it did not work.

same behaviour of my original account, the menu on the fence does nothing.

now I can see the option on the menu. but clicking it does nothing. tried to click anyway, delete the fence, but nothing happens. I'm assuming that if it was locked, a ticking mark would appear in the menu entry. but does not change

Running out of options for you here, jbortone...

When you did the cleanboot, are you certain you did it under a newly created Windows Administrator (<- important) account, you disabled any an all non-Windows services, and you re-enabled only both Fences entries in 'Startup'?

yes, I did the cleanboot exactly the way you was asked:

1) created a new admin account

2) log in in this account

3) installed fences

I did not disable non windows services because it was a newly created account, so no sw installed. and I'm assuming when installing fences, it automatically adds to startup right?

I ask again:

1) is there anyway a log fences creates to check for errors (file somewhere or in event manager)

2) any way to delete a fence, in registry or any config file? it must store this info somewhere. don't mind have to work on the registry. I understand how it works fairly.

A new account is not isolated from all other services.  Please proceed with disabling all non-MS services.

All of your Fences registry data is here:

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Fences

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Fences

ok, here's what I did:

1) created a new account, admin privileges.

2) MSCONFIG - turned off all non MS services and all startup itens

3) rebooted. did not change.

4) uninstalled Fences 5 (w/ purge) and installed Fences 4 (I have the license)

5) rebooted - nothing happened, same problem

6) uninstalled some app, including malwarebytes (the only one that can go deep in OS protection)

6) tested Fences 4 - nothing happened

7) uninstalled Fences 4 and installed Fences 5 beta - nothing happened.

the last resort would be a full windows install again, which I won't do. The only other SW that I imagine could conflict would be nvidia, but it's just a guess (and won't uninstall it either).

registry keys - got in there and there's no key for a specific fence, just standard app info stored. any other place?

The only thing that comes to mind is any overlay that those GPU apps have.  That said, they would be common and something we would expect to see more reports from even if how you have it set up is rare.
