Icons and Files Almost Gone, Can't Resize Fences, Icons and Files Still Gone after Fences Uninstalled

New Computer

Data transferred from Microsoft Surface Book 2 running Windows 10 Pro (where Fences worked perfectly) Operating System Windows 11 Pro Version 23H2 Build 22631.3007

I transferred my data from my old Windows 10 laptop to my new Windows 11 laptop with Laplink.  That process completed without error.  When I started my new laptop, I discovered that either Dell or Microsoft had installed Onedrive by default and it modified access to my Desktop and Documents to "user\OneDrive\Desktop" and "user\OneDrive\Documents".  I discovered that because I had a warning that I had exceeded the capacity of my OneDrive where I had been given 5GB.  I tried to disable that only to find that it's easier said than done.  I ended up buying one year of subscription so I would have the time required to completely undo the mess they made.  I include this information because it might provide a clue to fix the problem with Fences.

While Fences is installed, if I look in  File Explorer at the Desktop folder, I can see the folders, files, and applications that should appear on my desktop screen.  But they don't show up there.  What shows up is two fences, larger than my screen, each showing one file or folder.

When I uninstall Fences 5, I see that there is also an entry in Windows Settings|Apps for Fences 4.  After I successfully uninstalled Fences 5, the entry for Fences 4 is still there but it does not do anything.  Without Fences installed, there is only one folder at the top of the screen, the root folder for my user account.  If I right click on the Desktop and choose View|Show Desktop Icons, I can make it disappear or return.  Maybe if I knew how to control where Windows looks for the Desktop icons and files, I would find it is pointing to the wrong place.  Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. This most probably issue with OneDrive Desktop Sync. Please refer here: https://forums.stardock.com/501085/get;3785366

Thank you.

Ok. First, it seems I will have to solve it without Fences. When I get a normal desktop again, I can  then try starting Fences again.

Problem solved.  For some reason, the icon spacing and icon vertical spacing were set to -28860.  I found on the SuperUser forum an entry (https://superuser.com/questions/1554668/desktop-icons-spaced-out) where this caused an issue for someone and it was suggested that they reset entries in the Registry at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

to the default -1125 and reboot the computer.  I had been working on this for a while and was ready to try anything.  It turns out that this fixed it.
