Thumbnail preview not displaying on hover

Most of the time, when I hover over an icon in my task bar that has multiple windows open, the thumbnail preview for selecting which window I want doesn't show up. This means that I have to alt+tab to get to any minimized windows. This isn't app specific, it happens with windows explorer and firefox at the same time, so it is the taskbar itself. If I use the Windows taskbar instead, it works fine. Sometimes after rebooting it will also work for a bit then eventually stop working. Clicking on the icon does nothing but the click animation.

On a side note: sometimes the custom background of the start menu and taskbar won't load after said rebooting, but opening the configure menu and going to those settings (I don't have to change anything just open the page) usually fixes this.

Program: Start11 v1.47

OS: Windows 11 22H2 Build 22621.2715

Taskbar position: Top (so the thumbnail would normally display below it), I am not using auto-hide (which I know doesn't work)

Customizations: Left Aligned Custom Start icon, Win11 Style Custom Start Menu Background, Custom Taskbar Background, Always Combine Taskbar Buttons, Medium button size, Show seconds on clock, I believe everything else is the "default"

Let me know if any further information is needed to diagnose this issue.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Do you have any other 3rd party application installed or done any modification that will change how Windows explorer, Tasbar and/or Start panel work other than Start11? Other software such as Explorerpatcher, StartAllBack, Open Shell Menu etc.

Thanks

I do have DisplayFusion installed, which has a multi-monitor taskbar that overrides the Windows multi-monitor task bar (essentially this allows to have a separate taskbar on each monitor). However, this function is currently disabled (as is the Windows one). To my knowledge, DisplayFusion does not interact with the primary taskbar. I just now tried to enable it and reset the function to see it that changed anything, which it did not. Force closing it also did not help. I mainly use this for its wallpaper function and it has not been an issue with Start10 previously when I was on Windows 10.

I also have some process optimization running which while they do not interact with the taskbar, may interact with other processes. These are Process Lasso and Intelligent Standby List Cleaner. Stopping these did not change anything though.

Some additional troubleshooting I tried, none of which fixed it:

  • Moving the taskbar back to the bottom didn't fix.
  • Sometimes when clicking Firefox, it will open a new tab instead of doing nothing or going back to the last active window.
  • Setting the combine buttons to sometimes force separates the Firefox tabs which can then be used normally by clicking on them, but still no thumbnail preview, setting it back to always combine does not fix it afterward (I've also tried toggling it to never and back).
  • I also changed the taskbar size, I tried both medium and small with wide icon spacing.
  • Changing the alignment to Center (the Windows 11 default position)
  • Turning off the custom Start Button, Start Menu Background, and Taskbar Background.

I haven't had a chance to do the clean boot yet. But on another note, it will start working or stop working randomly without me doing anything. Like I just noticed it was working again at the moment partially. Right now, I can get the thumbnail preview to pop up by clicking on the icon (Firefox in this case). Hovering over it does not currently work. Either hovering or clicking working would be fine, it is when both don't work that it is a problem. I haven't changed anything since my last post, the only thing I've done so far was to lock/unlock my computer (my monitors shut off but the computer itself is on 24/7/365, not including rebooting for update/install/uninstall tasks).
