Icon Organization failure

Icons have unglued from fences

I had my Icons arranged in 5 Fences and when I started my Desktop this morning (11/18/2023) almost all the icons had disappeared from my organized Fences and reverted to the pre-organized state. I have no idea how this happened, but would like to get my organization back.     P.S. I have tried to restore from a previous screenshot unsuccessfully. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

I have had a similar issue.  Randomly, some of my icons jump out of their fences and back to the regular Windows desktop.  It's annoying to have to put them back.  I don't run Onenote as was suggested as a possible conflict in the reply by Basj.

Are those icons jump out of the Fences specifically on specific icons to specifics applications. Such as MS office documents?

Most of the ones that have jumped out of the fences are ones that I put in fences not long ago.  Ones that I have put in fences weeks ago seem to be staying now.  For example, I created shortcuts to the web interfaces of all my printers (I am the printer admin here on my campus) so I could get to them quickly right from my desktop.  As I was creating them, previously fenced shortcuts would jump out fairly regularly as I was creating more.  I would move them back in, only to have them jump out again randomly.  Now that I have completed the job and I am no longer putting more shortcuts into that fence, they have not jumped out anymore.  So I would say its something to do with putting icons/shortcuts into the fences that is causing this minor annoyance.

Hope this help!

Try putting those files in a Folder instead on your desktop. Than create a Portal Fences to that folder instead. This will ensure that the files in the folder will always be in that folder. Unless you deleted it.

Normal Fences is for your desktop shortcut icons. More for you launcher etc. For documents and files it is best to use the Portal Fences.

I am not sure how those file you use for all your printers work. But I do know that Ms Office document do like to jump out of a Fence. This is due to how Office file work. When you edit a file, For example, a Word document. It will create a temporary working file while you work on it. When you done. It will delete off your old document and rename that temp file to that old document. Fence when it see that old document being delete. It consider it was remove from the Fence. Even the new file name the same as the old one. It will still consider as a new document. It will not auto move it back to that original location. So, I might also assume it will also happen to any other files which might gone through similar process when updates itself.

Hope that explain it.

Basj,

The ones that were jumping out were simple shortcuts to a website, like http://192.168.0.117.  I can understand your reasoning for Word docs, but these are not.

I don't think I need to dwell on this any longer.  The shortcuts have stayed in place now for more then 24 hours, so the initial annoyance is gone and I will hope they stay there now.

Thanks.

Thank you for the information about the 2 Forum posts. I checked them out, but was unable to make use of them. Finally I decided to manually restore the old Fences order. While working on this I discovered a large number of copies, which I proceeded to delete. The OneDrive  Delete notification kept popping up, so I had to clean that out as well as the regular Recycle Bin. I hope that Fences 5 will do something to prevent this annoying problem from plaguing other users. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
