Grouped button left click behavior

Hello forum!

Using the plain Windows 11 taskbar, when I left-click on the taskbar icon of an app with multiple open windows, such as Firefox, thumbnails of the open windows pop up, and I can pick one. If I want a new Firefox window, I can right-click on the icon and pick this from the menu.

Using Start11 v2 with the 'enhance task bar' option enabled, left-clicking on the Firefox icon will open a new Firefox window. To access the thumbnail selection, you need to hover instead.

I tried for 5 days to retrain myself, but even when I remember I find the additional delay annoying and unnecessary. Is this behavior configurable? I cannot find any mention of it.

For now, I have switched 'enhance task bar' off.

Thanks,

Florian

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, I can not reproduce your steps for default Windows 11 taskbar (with Start11 enhance turn off). I don't need to left click on the taskbar button to make the popup appear. I just hover over it. And if that windows is not active, left clicking over it will make that application active. Right click on it while the application active or not will bring up the jump list with icons for running new instance, pin or unpin from taskbar or Close window.

So I am not sure on your issue. Maybe you have other 3rd party application running which change how Windows 11 taskbar button behavior?

Hello Basj,

thanks for looking into this. I don't think that we are seeing different behavior, I just may not have made my point clear.

Yes, with the default Windows 11 taskbar, you do not have to click, and just hovering will bring up the popup. But if you do click, this also brings up the popup. Which is good, because (1) clicking is also what you usually do when there is only a single window, so you can act consistently, and (2) clicking is slightly faster, because you do not need to hover for 100-400ms (whatever the exact delay is to recognize the mouse movement as a 'hover') before proceeding to the popup.

With Start11 enhancements enabled, clicking opens a new window, and hovering is the only option to access the popup. So instead of accessing the popup, my (instinctive) behavior of clicking on the taskbar icon constantly makes me open new windows instead of taking me to the popup.

So I think Start11 should behave exactly like Windows in this (click on icon -> popup, hover on icon -> also popup), or at least make this behavior configurable if you believe that 'click on icon -> new window' is a feature that people would actually want (which I doubt, but YMMV).

Thanks and best regards,

Florian
