Peek/Preview doesn't work with Start11

Hi! I apologize if this issue has been dealt with already, but I couldn't find an answer when I search. I have Start11 running on my Windows PC, and currently the peek/preview function from taskbar applications doesn't work. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't. It currently doesn't work at all despite restarts, reboots, and updates of both Start11 and Windows. If I tell Start11 to stop managing the taskbar, the previews work just fine, so it's pretty clearly a Start11 issue. I'm one of those people who uses the peek function constantly, and I'd prefer not to have to turn off Start11. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated! |-)

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need more information on your system. Please refer here: https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1387003915/Contacting+Stardock+About+Start+Product+Issues. Specially details on your Windows full version number and Start11 version. What popup when you hover mouse over those taskbar icons? Screenshots or video grab helps us understand the issue better.

Thanks

Sorry for the delay in responding!

The Start 11 version is 1.45, and it says "Windows Insider detected."

The Windows 11 version is 22H2, and here is the screengrab for that. I guess it's possible that the problem is the Insider version...

Windows version for gideonse

I also created a gif of what happens when I'm not getting previews.

No previews or peeks

I can't reproduce your issue on my system. It might be Windows insider issue. Do know that Stardock does not support Windows insider version. However, I have forwarded your problem to Stardock Support Team for their review. We appreciate your feedback.

Hello,

That version of Windows 11 is from the developer branch, we keep and eye on the changes in these versions and if needed, will update when it is closer to a general public release. Thanks for reporting

FWIW, I see this problem as well and I was coming to post something about it when I saw this thread.  I am on the 22H2 build (OS build 22621.1848) as far as Windows is concerned.  My symptoms match the OP's exactly - especially the part about it seeming random in that it will work sometimes and then stop working without any notice.  Basically when the problem happens, you can hover over the taskbar icons but nothing pops up.  It is still possible to click on it; however, it will only display the most recent item (if stacked).  To fix this, I have gotten used to keeping my Task Manager open so that I can use the 'Restart Task' on Windows Explorer which ALWAYS fixes the problem, but it's also inevitable that it will happen again but seems random as to when.

Now, I had gone back through some old release notes/forum posts and saw that this problem had apparently been corrected some time ago but I never really found that to be the case.  So, I started thinking about what kinds of things might be unique to my setup that might cause this problem and I came up with 2 things that might be worth mentioning.  The first is that I currently use a KVM switch which allows me to toggle between using the same keyboard and mouse on 2 different systems (in this case, my home PC and my work laptop) but everything goes through the same monitor.  From what I can tell, switching from my home PC to my work laptop causes it to lose focus in terms of system processing (Windows makes the disconnect and reconnect sound for example) but when I switch back to my home PC, it normally still works fine (although I do notice that it seems to first need to resize itself automatically) but at some point, I will lose the ability to peak/preview as called out by the OP.  The second thing that might be unique to my system is that I have my graphics card connected via HDMI to a 4K TV in addition to my computer monitor (via DisplayPort), which is 1080p.  As such, I do need to switch resolutions a few times or engage HDR mode which does cause my monitor to refresh itself each time but I have not noticed anything happening with those actions to suggest that this could be the culprit; I just thought I would mention it as well.

I have tried uninstalling, restarting, and then reinstalling Start11 1.45 and it seems like that will allow it to work longer than it would if I was just restarting the task in the Task Manager but you can definitely count on it still happening.

I should have probably asked this in my other post but is this something that I should create my own thread for even though my situation is pretty similiar, if not identical to, the OP?

Interesting that it's happening to you and you're not on a Windows Insider build. That means it's something that Stardock should probably deal with. I have completely given up on getting peek/preview back, so I've stopped using Start11 to manage my taskbar. This sucks, of course. But the preview is too important to how I work not to have it.

I'm having exactly the same problem. Peek/preview randomly stops working and only restarting explorer (via Configure Start11->Taskbar->Restart Explorer) fixes it. I'm on a standard Win11 Pro 22H2 install, upgraded from Win 10 Pro, details:

Edition    Windows 11 Pro
Version    22H2
Installed on    ‎26/‎05/‎2023
OS build    22621.1848
Experience    Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22642.1000.0

did this issue ever get resolved? because I'm having the exact same behavior occur with Start11v2 (it was happening with Start11 as well), only I've found with my multi-monitor setup that it's always only the MAIN monitor's taskbar that loses Peak. My secondary monitor (therefore the "extended" taskbar) never has this issue. Just as described above, the main one loses functionality at random but it seems to break more often than it's working.

Edition Windows 11 Pro

Version 23H2

Installed on ‎9/‎16/‎2023

OS build 22631.2861

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22681.1000.0

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, I still can not reproduce the issue on my system and from the reports its seem randomly happen and can be resolved by restarting explorer.exe. What I can suggest is to create a batch file to restart explorer.exe and put it on your desktop or somewhere convenient for you. Use this script:

taskkill /im explorer.exe /f
start explorer.exe
exit

Taken from here: https://superuser.com/questions/1245653/how-to-restart-explorer-exe-with-a-batch-file

Also, if you know any steps that you can take and produce the issue 100% of the time, please post it here so I can try it to reproduce the issue.

Thanks

I mean that's not really an acceptable/feasible solution for something that other taskbar programs I've tried haven't had issues with. The only thing I can think of (as to why it seems to be such a rare, specific issue) is that I also use DisplayFusion for monitor switching and automation BUT I have anything and everything (including in the "hidden" advanced settings for DF) related to taskbar(s) turned off

Does anyone else reporting here also use DisplayFusion? Please confirm this.

Similar issues with taskbar peek view.

When the taskbar is on the bottom it works fine (bottom image).  When the taskbar is on the top only the top edge of the peek image shows.  I have tried numerous options trying to find a cause and it seems to be an issue with the Microsoft Surface Pro (I have the 7+).

I am using three windows computers with Start11v2 and the only one with this issue is the Surface PC

I am using:

Edition Windows 11 Pro

Version 23H2

Installed on ‎8/‎8/‎2024

OS build 22635.4367

Serial number 012328520253

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1048.0

I am also using Windows Insiders on the Surface PC.

If a fix is found please let me know.  In the meantime I will continue to single out the cause of this issue.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, you was posting in an old thread which was on older Start11 version. Please start a new thread and also include your current Start11 full version number. We will try to help you from that new thread.

Thank you.
