The Big Dipper

I was up very early this morning so it was still dark. I looked up at the big dipper and wondered, how is it positioned where everyone else is? So, now I guess I am asking.
I figure we could go by which direction the open part of the pot/ladle is facing.

Here in Wisconsin it is facing north-east.

/me starts to here in here mind. "And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby, It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky. Somewhere out there.........."

Not sure, haven't looked for ages, did once try getting into look at stars with a proggie on the Atari (many years ago)

It appears in the same place for everyone depending on time of day and time of year - but either higher or lower depending on your latitude. And not at all for those in the Southern hemisphere. Confused?
