Crash: Fences Fails to Start after System Crash

Cannot get Fences to work, it's been fine for years but after a system crash it seems to have permanently screwed itself.

Crash: Fences Fails to Start after System Crash

App Usage: Fences doesn't start on Windows start-up, then trying to enable Fences by the right mouse contextual menu, continually get the following message:

System details:

Intel Xeon E5-1650 v4 3.60GHz

128 GB RAM

NVidia P4000 graphics card (CAD spec.).

The program itself has been running perfectly for many years without issue, now this disastrous episode has occurred.  I've spent the last three hours of 'work time' trying to resolve it, all to no avail.  I did try uninstalling, purging and then reinstalling and this got it working but with a default layout. Upon trying to restore any previous backup it gives up and goes back to refusing to start at all.

I've tried killing Explorer.exe but that did nothing.

I've re-booted the machine many times, again no joy.

I love the software, but of course I haven't got the time or inclination to setup my preferred layout each time the system doesn't reboot properly. If this can't be resolved then I'll have to discontinue my use of the product indefinitely. It's a shame but if we can't get it running again that's the only realistic option available to me.

Thanks in advance for any advice you might be able to offer.

Dave

Update:

As a last resort/effort to get this thing working, I downloaded a trial of Fences 4, as I had Fences 3 Business before that. Everything now works completely fine I was able to restore a previous layout and all is now good.

I'm a bit miffed that I'll have to make another purchase just to get software to continue to run.  I do love the software, and had complete confidence in it until this morning. Hopefully Fences 4 will rebuild my confidence and not let me down.

Thanks anyway.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Yes, I remember Fences 3 have this issue back when I was running Fences 3. Usually it happen when there is a corrupted portal Fences. Need to removed that portal Fences including the saved layout snapshot that have that portal Fences saved.

Anyway, since you already move to Fences 4, need to let you know, a heads up, if you happen to see this similar issue happening on Fences 4 please do this test: https://forums.stardock.com/514583/get;3875625 there are same issue raise by user connecting with Shared folder/drive not loading for Fences at boot.

Thanks

Hi Basj,

Thanks for your quick response, and for your suggestions in case Fences 4 decides to go bad, it is much appreciated.

What you are saying sounds feasible, as all I use Fences for is folder portals. And as I mentioned in the previous messages, when I got it working it crashed again once I tried to restore a saved layout snapshot.  What you are saying here matches up perfectly to what I was seeing.

Despite me moving to Fences 4 now, I do appreciate the support and you getting back to me so quickly.

I've now purchased a license of the Fences 4 app, and also somehow got roped into buying ObjectDock, but having installed it the thing looks really good - it will benefit me a lot when used in tandem with the folder portals.

Hope you have a good day, thanks again!

Dave

I experienced similar problems during last few days. The IT department seemed to identified Fences as the problem. Many files and folders went to the recyled bin automatically. I then restored and hundreds of unsorted moving files and folders all over the desktop.

I now have the huge task of sorting files. I love Fences and hope V9 is ok.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, may I know how it was concluded that Fences is moving files and folders to recycled bin automatically?

Thanks

The exact same thing happened to me recently also. Hundred of unsorted files to sort that went to the recycle bin. My IT department at school also said it was the fences.

Fences does not physically move files/folders/shortcuts from one physical location to another by itself. It just organize/arrange your folders and icons into Fences graphically. It does not physically move it anywhere.

Thank you,
