CRASH: Double-clicking on icon in portal

Fences 4.0.7.2, Windows 10 version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2486)

This is the second time I have had to uninstall Fences and reinstall due to the following error caused by double clicking on a pdf file in a portal window.

ERROR MESSAGE: FENCES HAS DETECTED THAT EXPLORER WAS NOT CLOSED PROPERLY.  AS A PRECAUTION, FENCES HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY DISABLED.  TO RE-ENABLE FENCES, OPEN FENCES 'SETTINGS AND CHOOSE 'ENABLE FENCES''.  That solution does not work.  Have to uninstall and reinstall.

Is this a known bug?  Is there a fix in the works?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. May I know where is the physical location of that Portal Fences? local or network share etc? Also, you on Fences 3 or Fences 4? Full version number please.

Thanks

VERSION:

  • Fences 4.0.7.2
  • Windows 10 version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2486)

The portal is pointing to my local SSD :  C:\Users\username\Documents

Is this a known bug?  Is there a fix in the works?

No, its is not normal and not a known bug.

Is the issue with the same portal Fences only? or to specific file only?

To dig deeper, Is the issue also happen to other type of files such a txt file or document file etc? From other portal fences or From the same portal Fence? Be more details so we can try to figure out what went wrong.

Thank you,

The crash has happened at least twice.  I was double-clicking on PDF and PNG files.

Duplicating the error is a real hassle.  When I click on the button to re-enable the app nothing happens...the same error diaglog just reappears.  I can't get into Fences to restore my layout from backup so I have to reinstall Fences.  I learned that after un-installing Fences I have to restart the computer or I will get a message telling me to restart after I reinstalled.  So, at that point I have to uninstall again, restart the computer, then reinstall Fences 4.xxx.  Then I have to re-organize my desktop the way I like it because the backups haven't been accessible.

I wonder if I can go into file explorer and the registry if necessary and preserve my desktop layout backups without being able to open Fences after it crashes?

In the mean time, to avoid this problem, I never double click on a file in a portal...I open the file explorer by double clicking the title bar and open the file from Windows file explorer.  So, for now the only thing the portal is good for is a desktop shortcut to a Windows folder that I can scroll through for viewing the files but not open the files.

Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Reorganize your desktop again as you always did. But this time save a layout snapshot manually. After that back it up using this guide [Link] .

Also, you have not answer my previous questions.

Your questions:

1) "happen to other type of files such a txt file or document file etc?" All files

2) "From other portal fences or From the same portal Fence?" Any portal

Note, that I did not intend to try to diagnose it further.  I don't have the time, however, a couple of days ago I inadvertantly, clicked on a PDF file in a portal and it did an unrecoverable crash again.  Fortunately, I had "advanced crash reporting selected".  So you should find more than enough information in that advanced crash report.

Please let me know if you can find that advanced crash report.  My name is Roger Newhall.  My registered Stardock email is [email protected].

Try this. As a test, move the location of that folder on your SSD, that you linked to that portal Fences to another physical drive. Recreate the Portal Fences and pointing to that moved folder. Test if the same issue appear. If it still appear. It tell you there is something or a file in there is causing it. If not, than there is something blocking Fences from reading that SSD location.

From what I know, Fences will crash when it cannot read or get to the files that appear in the Fences.
