Icons Changing Locations

Hi, Fences 4.0 (4.0.7.2) on Windows 11. Sort set to none. Almost every time I reboot, the icons in one of my Fences will change locations. Not all of them, just a few of them. I've tried setting the Fences to lock but it makes no difference. Any idea why this is happening and suggestions on how to prevent icons from moving around within the Fence?

Thanks

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know few things.

  1. Windows 11 full version numbers. Please use Winver.exe to get it.
  2. You monitor/s resolutions and Scaling applied (100%,125% etc)
  3. Is the moving icons inside a normal Fence or Portal Fence?
  4. Can we have a video or screenshot of this happening.

Thanks

Hi, thanks for the quick reply!

Windows 11 version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.1281)

One monitor only, 2560 x 1440, 125% scaling

Moving icons inside a normal Fence

Don't have a video. It didn't happen on this boot. The only thing I changed was moving the Fence to the top of the screen area whereas it used to be in middle of the screen on the left side of the monitor. We'll see what happens over the next couple of days.

Hello, it happened again today. Some of the icons at the top of the Fence were swapped with icons in other locations. I'd appreciate some help in fixing this behaviour. Thanks

This is why we need a video to see the issue and understand what is happening. I can not try to recreate the issue on my system and try to figure out what is the issue. Icon move from a location, could be a lot of things. For example, Changing icons size or New icons coming in to the fences via Fences rules. Try to capture the issue on video so we can understand it and help you.

How do I capture this on video? I shut the computer down and the icons are in one spot. I boot the computer up a day or two later and the icons have moved. How will a video help? It won't show the icons actually moving. Do you want a photo instead? Let me know what I can do to help resolve this.

Just rebooted and my three Fences have changed size. They've moved from being rectangular in shape to being large squares. The icons are all still there but have moved around again. The Fence's bottom locations have moved way off the visible screen and it takes several resizing attempts to get the borders to be visible again. This is not fun.

Not really sure what happening in your system. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Note: Do know that purge is not the same as uninstalling.

Will try this and report back. I also noticed this morning that the spacing between icons has changed and that some long icon names are overlaying the names of the icons beside them. Thanks

Unfortunately on boot-up this morning, icons within one Fence swapped positions again. I did the purge and the re-install yesterday. Is it possible that icons with longer names are causing the program to re-sort on a new boot?

Oh, I should mention that the sizes of the Fences increased downward for each of my three Fences.

I believe this usually happen when you change icons sizes. Icons sizes can be change manually by simple press Ctrl on the keyboard while scrolling up or down on your mouse scroll wheel. If that happen you can reset the icons size by right click on the desktop->View-> Medium icons (or which ever icons size you prefer)

Hi, I've never re-sized the icons. It's weird because the other Fences don't swap their icons around. Just this one Fence with a lot of icons with long names.

I went into the icon size menu and changed them from Small to Medium and then back to small again (just in case I had accidently re-sized something).  The icons in that problematic Fence did exactly what it's been doing lately and moving icons around. I'll manually put them back into their correct position and let you know what happens after the next reboot.

That didn't help. This morning, the Fences resized themselves some of the icons got jumbled up again.

I think there is another application controlling your desktop icons. Try cleanboot and see if if you can figure which is conflicting with Fences. https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot

I appreciate the effort but I give up. I don't want to spend more time troubleshooting. Thanks anyway.
