Fences not starting at boot after last update / purge / reinstall

Hi, All, after the most recent update Fences is not working:

1. The first issue was the common one where all icons were missing from the desktop after the upgrade

2. I have uninstalled/purged/reinstalled several times

3. Both tasks are enabled for startup but the processes do not start

4. When I right-click on a blank area of the desktop, I see an "Enable Fences" option but it doesn't seem to work.

5. I have tried creating a second admin user and following the "clean boot" instructions, the behavior hasn't changed

Hello,

Sorry to hear you having issue. Need more information. When you enable Fences, do you still see your desktop icons? i.e. no Fences and all icons are on desktop? Or nothing on your desktop?

Thank you,

Hello, at the moment Windows is working as it should, with my icons on the desktop but w/o fences.

Selecting "Enable Fences" doesn't actually seem to do anything.

Additionally, I can run Fences using the icon on my desktop and I have disabled Hotkeys, Quick-Hide, Roll-up Fences, and Desktop Pages.  But I can't create fences.

Did you try loading your saved layout snapshot? Also check if you have not accidently locked your Fences.

And

Thank You.  I don't actually see the "lock fences" option under View, I only get the "Enable Fences" option per the screen capture above.  Previously I did try to restore an older snapshot after one of the reinstalls but more recently as part of uninstalling and after purging I deleted the stardock folders in appdata/local and appdata/roaming, and the snapshots were no longer present.   If I try to manually take a snapshot now I get the error attached to this post.

Sure.  I have done that before w/o success but I have tried it again.  The behavior hasn't improved even with a new admin account and following the clean boot procedures

What happened if you try to enable Fences? Do the view ->Lock Fences appear?

Thank You, Basj,

I created a sandbox and installed a trial version of Fences within it.  The behavior hasn't changed, even in the sandbox, as far as I can tell.

I'm having the same problem.  Fences was working great but the system crashed and had to re-install Windows 11.  The symptoms is exactly the same as above.

I've loaded and clean installed Version 4.0.7.2 a number of times.

The Windows 11 install is a clean install with only Chrome and Thunderbird installed above all the junk Microsoft puts on the system.

I've tried all the hints above and nothing is working.  I really like fences and would like to get this program to work.

You reinstalled Windows 11, format OS Drive and then install or install over?

Hello,

I just got objectdesktop subscription yesterday, I tried to install and use Fences on Windows 11, but it's not working, uninstall, reinstall, multiple times with no luck, I cannot create any fences on the desktop, tried all the above options with no luck, I wonder if it's a win11 compatibility issue?

Thanks

Not sure what you are asking.  I clean installed Windows 11 because the system crashed.  The disk partition(s) were reformatted.  I cleaned install Fences 4 multiple times by uninstalling and running the install program.  Rebooting each time in the process.

Hope this answers your question.

Basj, FYI, I found a previous version of Fences, 4.1.0 on cnet.com.  If I install that version Fences works fine, if I upgrade to the latest version of Fences the desktop icons go away and Fences doesn't work.  This is very consistent, I don't have to uninstall or purge to switch between the versions, I just run the installer for 4.1.0 it works, run the upgrade it doesn't work, re-run the installer for 4.1.0 it works again.  So when support is ready I can recreate the issue consistently.

Also, in the middle image of my first post I incorrectly assumed that the two processes configured to start with Windows would have "fences" in the process name and that they weren't starting. I know now that the two processes aren't named fences but rather uses rundll32.  They do start at windows startup after the upgrade even though fences doesn't work.

Sorry, but I need to clearify, Did you get the latest version via ODM (ObjectDesktop Manager) or update button via Fences or download directly from your account? https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products. If you did via ODM or via Fences update button, have you ever tried direct download from your account And, use that version instead.

Also, just sharing something, do you have any issue on your Windows 11 update? Have you update to the latest Windows 11 official update properly. I am asking because I had a similar Fences issue on my system. Fences simple won't start or won't finish install. But, I also notice that my Windows 11 update is having installation error. All issues, Fences and Windows update, gone after I do a manual download and install new Windows 11.

Hi, Basj,  I don't know what ODM is but I have tried both A) letting 4.1.0 update itself in response to the notification that an update was available, and B) downloading the most recent version from the Website and installing it.

I haven't had issues updating Windows 11.  I even just downloaded and installed the latest updates and tried to upgrade Fences but the behavior hasn't changed.  One thing that did change is that the desktop icons were visible and in the right place on the desktop, but they didn't have any fences around them and I couldn't create new fences.
