I'm interested in Object Desktop, but I'm not sure if it's a software purchase or a subscription.

Object desktop is a Subscription process to access ongoing access and updates of the suite of sotware.
At any time during the subscription you can download, archive, and use any and all included programs.
If or when you cease subscribing you retain access and use of all the programs you have downloaded.
What you will no longer have access to is any subsequent updates....;)
