4.0.0.3 Icons and files missing

from Stardock Forums

I have read as many posts about disappearing icons as I could find... I was running trial version of Fences 3, went ahead and purchased Fences 4 for Business... Installed, and all files, icons and folders that were on my desktop are gone. They cannot be located through file manager (Win10) Just gone. I have tried everything I read. Trying to restore a snapshot does nothing at all. Unchecking desktop pages does nothing at all. Reboot no help, purge and reinstall no help.

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Are the Fences gone too or just the icons/folders are gone yet the Fences still there on the desktop? Something like reported here : https://forums.stardock.com/513002

Fences gone also. I am using Dropbox if that could be interfering... But the files and folders were stored on the desktop and backed up to Dropbox. The files are no longer on my computer, and they were not all in Fences. The only things that didn't disappear were programs or links to programs. Shortcuts to Control Panel and such are also gone.

If your files and folders actually missing from your hard drive than, I do not think it is Fences issue. One thing I can think of is dying drive. But, to be sure. I have forward your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

Still no reply? It's not a dying hard drive. Only items on the desktop disappeared - things I saved. Not icons for software. Didn't matter if they were in Fences or not. All gone. Luckily backed up to Dropbox. Happened as soon as I upgraded. This has happened before, but the Fences Purge worked to bring it all back. This time searching for a file name brings up nothing.

I re-forward your issue to Support. From what I know, Fences do not deletes things from desktop. It just manage it into Fences. So I really not sure why it deletes off things from your desktop folder.

Hi Rick,

I am not sure this would be a Fences issue, everything disappearing from the desktop seems like something else is going on. Do you have any other type of "desktop management" software installed? Is it possible you had a Windows crash and restored it to a point before all of the items where place there?

Were these files remote (dropbox, onedrive, ect) or local?

There were no issues before.  Files were local saved to desktop. Some in Fences, some not. Files, folders were affected as well as things like pinning 'My Computer' or such to the desktop. I was using the trial, upgraded and boom - that's exactly when it happened. I did not restore, no crash. I tried the snapshot thing and it showed a picture of my old desktop but would not restore it. Since then I have saved to the desktop with no issue, nothing else is wrong, no files missing or anything anywhere else. Newer system, everything else working as it should. No other desktop management software. Have been using Fences for a long time. On this new computer I installed the trial then paid to upgrade - and bam. This happened on another of my computers after updating to the newest version but the Purge fixed it. Luckily I was backed up to Dropbox, but the files were saved locally then backed up...

Hi Rick,

Do you have Desktop Pages enabled? Could you try turning it off and see if that brings them back?
