Start11_64 Periodically Reverts to Windows 11 Standard Start Menu

Hello,

I've been using Start11 (64 bit) since My Newer Dell Windows 10 desktop was eligible for the free W11 upgrade and I updated it (around November or December, '21).

Now, every 2 - 3 weeks, in the middle of a computing session, When I click on the Start Menu, the default W11 start menu displays. Instead of navigating through there to find Start11, I open a file explorer window to program files (x86)\Start11 and click on the _64 .exe file.  The menu refreshes.

How can I keep this from happening again?

Would appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks,

lrand0

I have had this problem with touch on my Surface Pro from version 1.0.  Mouse click are fine.

My desktop hasn't had as problem until the latest version 1.22.  It doesn't happen often but can be annoying.

Are you saying the problem isn't a one off click causing this, but if it happens then it continues to not work until you run that again?

Well,

I did the purge and the system rebooted.

I opened my default browser (Firefox) and logged into my Stardock account and clicked on the now black My Account icon. A drop-down menu displays with an link to My Downloads, do I clicked it.

The downloads page come up and showed my only one, Start11, so I rolled-over the [Download] button and the caption displayed. It showed Version: 1.22, at 40.2 MB.

You wanted me to grab the latest version from your Stardock account. Since only 1 file came up other than the beta, I'd like to be sure.  Is this one the latest?

Thanks,

1.22 is the current release, 1.23 is a beta but preferred version.  Did you see Neil's question to you above your last reply?

OK, I'll download and install the beta version then.

No, I didn't notice his question until you just brought it to my attention.

Not sure what he means by a one off click, but I can tell you that once the start menu reverts back to native W11, it stays that way (light blue task bar icon) until I launch Start11 again.

Hello Again,

The beta version that you asked me to install on May 13 has been working well and may have solved the problem. I just got a popup dialog, though, that says "An update for Start11 has been found (40.2 MB), would you like to download and install it now?". It has options to download & install now or to be reminded later.

Is this the production version of the beta I installed, or something else? In light of what this post is about, would this still be a good version to go with?

Thank you,

lrand0

Hello,

Please be so kind as to review the thread for this post.

The beta version I had downloaded early in May, '22 worked nicely.  In the time since, I would receive notices that Start11 updates were available, but not wanting to experience the issue again, I avoided installing them.

Well, I guess I shouldn't have, but last week, I downloaded and installed the version 1.39.1 update, and now, again, the menu that randomly displays after power up is the native Windows 11 menu. I need to type Start11 in that menu to bring up the S11 screen, where I click on the already-dark radio button for "Windows 10". At that point, the Start11 menu is reinstated.

I power my PC down every evening, so now, when I boot up the next time either the Windows11 or the Start11 (as Windows 10) comes up. I have detected no pattern.

I don't have a version number for you of the one that this most recent update replaced, but upon searching my downloads folder, there are Setup items for versions
1.1.1.1-j124,
1.23.-j190, and
1.25.0.0

I can't think of any other diagnostic observations I've made, but if there's anything specific you'd like me to check, by all means let me know.

Thank you,

lrand0

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try this, uninstall Start11, reboot immediately (important), Download the latest version V1.4.2, location of the download can be found here: https://forums.stardock.com/517565. Install that version. Reboot again. Retest and report back.

Thanks

Hello,

I uninstalled S11 and rebooted, then downloaded and installed Beta version 1.4.2, and rebooted again.

What I guess I shouldn't have done when I uninstalled, was to remove settings. I checked that box and so when I clicked the windows button after the 2nd reboot, I saw that all of the program icons I had populated in the "Pinned" area had gone away.

Perhaps luckily, my system performs nightly backups to the cloud, and my \users\ folder is included in the set.
* Are my Start11 settings stored somewhere within that folder?
* What sub-folder and/or files should I look for?

Thanks

Which menu style are you using?

Win10/11 menu styles are stored in the registry.

Windows 10

When I type "start11" from the start menu, a browser session opens to display the Start11 HTML main screen . The Windows 10 radio button is already dark, but I click on it again.

I click on the start menu icon and indeed, a W10 style menu displays. I'm just not getting the 15 or so small icons I had pinned before the uninstall earlier today.

Hope this helps.
