Start 10

problems after installing Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021

After installing this Microsoft product I found I could no longer change or rename desktop icons. after taking ownership of the shortcuts I am able to rename some of them but when trying to change icons I right click, click change icon and no dialogue box opens with my custom icons from Icon packager? when it first started after the install of the MS program all my desktop shortcuts where white blanks, that has been solved by selecting my default browser then all the icons changed to Brave browser icons...even those that had you tube icons?

Any help would be appreciated

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Not sure how can Start10 affect icons on desktop. How are you work out that Start10 is the one that causing your issue?

Thanks

I didn't mean to imply start 10 caused the issue, I have start 10, curser fx, Icon packager, Theme manager, and window Fx. I posted here because I no longer have control over my desktop Icons, in hopes someone else has come across this problem so please, I'm not pointing the finger at any one program or app at this point. so lets not point fingers and just work the problem ok

Well, since you put "Start10" on the top of your post anybody will surely assume its on Start10, no?

Please try the following:

-For Win8/10 Users: Open the Start Screen, and type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator' from below.

-Type: sfc /scannow

-Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes)

If the SFC finds errors, but cannot fix them, please also run the following command in the same command prompt window:

dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

The above command should assist with replacing any damaged or problematic system files. Please note, however, since it may require restoring certain files, this process can take some time and you will need to be patient until it has completed.

Please let me know whether this resolves your problem or if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

I figured it out, and what caused it! It was the installation of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021. Installing this software changed all the permissions and default program extensions to Microsoft defaults. By taking ownership of the folders and files associated with my browsers (I have 3) then changing the default apps back to what I had instead of Microscum defaults I now have regained control of all my desktop icons. BTW I ran all the file checkers and disk image checkers before I posted to this forum. In case anyone runs into this problem, when you install Microsoft products be prepared for everything to be reset to Microscum defaults. thankyou for your time.
