Impossible to purge Fences!

Exasperation Setting In - Tried everything I have found here but cannot remove Fences in Windows 10 and also lost any snapshot

This has become a daily frustration which is a new experience with the Fences program (that I have valued for years).

Fences refused to update after the usual issues mentioned elsewhere in this community. I have exhausted all the advice and fixes recorded here and still I have a broken version of an old Fences program on my PC.

I cannot get rid of it or change the re-install directory and every attempt just loses the snapshot and I have to start over with the broken version.

Any ideas (or even help from Stardock support)?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: [link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall in its default directory, and Reboot immediately after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Also note to backup your snapshot you can use this guide : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#backupsnapshots

Ah! Thanks for your reply but you may have missed the point here (or I didn't make it clear enough in the first place).

That is exactly the link I followed before and it did not purge Fences at all, only destroyed my layout and the fences program. I cannot get rid of anything to do with Fences or the program itself so purging in this way fails (everytime). All the icons are superimposed in one position so Fences does not work and I cannot remove it either.

That is my dilemma!

Also, I cannot direct a new install to any other directory.

I hope I am not going to need to re-install Windows and all of the consequences that entails?

Because you have Fences in an non-default directory now?  If so, that could be why the purge is not working...

To do it manually, in Startup, make sure Fences it not set to start:

Reboot and delete the directory you have Fences installed on. Reinstall in the default directory and see if you are good...

If that fails, run the purge again, reboot, reinstall.

Fences is installed in the default directory. It cannot be moved from there as that option is not available to me anyway.

I will try the other suggestion and see if that makes any difference though.

That did it!

Had trouble finding it in Windows Task Manager as it wasn't listed in a logical way. Eventually found an obscure reference which was duplicated for some odd reason. After disabling both in Startup I was able to reinstall the latest Fences version successfully on my next reboot.

Thanks for your helpful suggestion, it worked!
