Deskscapes 11 and Windows 8.1

I just recently renewed object desktop as I wanted to checkout the latest version of deskscapes, as I had problems with all the previous versions  8.51, 10.0, 10.01, 10.02c I finally uninstalled it.

Now attempting to install version 11 (10.93) but it will not install on any OS other than 10??

Is this going to work with Win 8.1 in the future?  (I do not plan to upgrade to a newer OS) Or have I renewed for nothing??

Please advise.

Thank You

MJ

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. From Deskscape 11 page, yes, it is compatible for Windows 10 with Version 21H1 and above only. As will it be compatible with V8.1 in the future, is unknown at this moment. Perhaps Support or Dev Team can come in and give a better information on this.

DeskScapes 11 was designed for Windows 10 only.

If you look at the Steam hardware stats you will see that 0.76% of installs are running Windows 8.1.  This compares to > 1% who run Linux.

Given these numbers it simply isn't economically sensible to allocate resources to supporting Windows 8 especially as pretty much any computer which can run Windows 8 can also run Windows 10 and got a free upgrade to it.

Well, least Stardock could do is to let the installer run in the 8.1 OS (It begins to run the installer then says Win 10 required).

Stardock can allow it to run on older OS  (I can understand you not wanting to offer support for older systems),  but at least letting the installer run does not change anything on your end, except it may work on many older version OS, thus more sales for Stardock..

It may run on my system.  The vast majority of software designed for older 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows, including 7, 8.0, XP,  etc  will run on Win7,  Win8.1 and Win10  unless the installer specifically checks the version of the OS.

I would think Dreamscapes 11 would run on Win 8.1 as long as all the required video codecs are available.

Stardock needs to allow the installer to run.  You can still specify Windows 10 only and make mention that no support will be given on older operating systems.  Has stardock attempted to run DS11 on older versions of Windows?? I bet not.

Thanks in advance.

Can you say why you have not upgraded to Windows 10? Windows 11 is also coming this fall.

Comparability issues with some software and mainly hardware.

Main reason is I don't like to be monitored 24/7 (I've been playing this game since Win 3.1) And I don't like the direction windows went. They never finished 8.0 just went to 8.1 to fix problems. Windows 10 still has problems so jump ship to Windows 11 ???  Beta testers again??  No thanks.

If stardock will not unlock the installer to run on previous version of windows, then I will seek a refund thru stardock or last resort paypal.  If the installer ran right off and it just didn't work with windows 8.1,  I would have then found it is not compatable with my OS and would be OK.  But the fact that I can't even try is not acceptable.

Thanks again.  (PS you can send me an unlocked installer.exe to my email address on file).

DeskScapes 11 will not work on Windows 8.  Thats why the installer blocks it.

The UI alone uses a font which Windows 8 does not have and so half the UI will turn into small squares and the font is not legally redistributable.

We only block things when there is a reason and there is a reason.

Windows 8.1 is now obsolete and came out 8 years ago.  Microsoft stopped mainstream support of it back in 2018 and there have been no less than 12 versions of Windows 10 released since.
