Animated wallpaper preventing Windows 10 sleep?

I've noticed recently that my Windows 10 (2004) PC won't enter sleep mode while using an animated wallpaper. I want to say I've used this same animated wallpaper before, but don't recall having issues with the PC going to sleep after the specified inactivity period.

Setting the wallpaper to a static image, using DeskScapes, is how I determined the animation is the prime suspect. With a static image, the PC enters sleep mode automatically when it should. This was after updating to the latest AMD Radeon video drivers available, as well as any other updated device drivers I could find as of time of this post. I also have the latest cumulative updated for Windows 10 installed.

Am I remembering incorrectly that animated wallpapers, using DeskScapes, shouldn't interfere with Windows sleep mode? Any other thoughts or potential fixes?

  1. Windows version 20H2, build 19042.746
  2. Deskscapes version 10.03
  3. I will test to see if other animated wallpapers exhibit the same behavior, but I've noticed it with "Space Galaxy".

I've also encountered the issue with the PC not wanting to go into a sleep state using the 4K Exiting Hyperspace animated wallpaper, but not with the animated 4K Black Hexagons.

Yes, I did.

The issue only seems to occur with certain animated wallpapers.

In Deskscapes app go to setting and you'll see 3 options you can

change try each setting and see if one works for you better than the

current setting .

I'll give that a try and see if it changes the result. Thanks for the suggestion!

Tried the other two settings with no change in results.

I have the same issue with the stock  "Spring" dream (Ants down the tree).

Sleep (Display Off) will not engage.   I will test if "pausing" the animation makes any difference.

EDIT:  As I anticipated, in my case, screen sleep works if the animation is paused.

CORRECTION:  Sleep worked this morning (with animation enabled), there must be something else at play ....

Update: After upgrading to the Radeon version 21.3.2 drivers (still running DeskScapes 10.03), my PC is able to enter sleep mode on its own. Keeping my fingers crossed that it continues to do so.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

If having issues with DeskScapes try updating your video drivers .

Not having Win7 to test any more I would also try updating video drivers

you may also want to try updating codecs here https://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm

Klite codecs are free and works for me .. Default install is fine.

I had the same issue my PC won't sleep. After updates and troubleshooting everything else on Windows 10,  I then have installed Windows 11 and sleep worked. The first app to install was Deskscapes and the light codec pack. The same issue came up no sleep. This was my determination that it is the app or the codecs. I'm wondering if Deskscapes 11 has resolved the issue? Could it be the codecs, perhaps PC thinking it's running a video stream so it won't sleep?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, Deskscape 10 and 11 are not Officially compatible yet with Windows 11. Please refer here : https://forums.stardock.com/505717/windows-11-and-stardock-app-compatibility
