DVD Drive Questions

Okay, it's getting near the time to get a new machine. The thing is, I want a machine that can burn DVD movies that I can watch on most DVD players.

My iMac has a DVD-RW drive and works quite well a tth etask of creating DVDs that I can play on a regular DVD player. I have a ton of movies of my kids and I want to make DVDs of them.

I generally just buy Dell machines these days. Mainly because they are quieter and cost okay. I used to build my own machines but I really don't have the time for that these days. But the Dell machines only come with DVD+RW which I've read aren't as compatbile with regular DVD players at playing movies. Is that true?

Anyway, any suggestions?

As far as I can tell there are still 2 formats for DVD burning....much like the VHS and Beta of the past....so I'd be hanging in there until a 'winner' emerges...at least...

The way I heard it the DVD+ drives are more compatible with DVD players. They're also less likely to produce coasters. There's a couple drives that do both plus and minus. You could get your Dell without a burner and add one of those.

I went for the Plextor 504 which is a DVD+ burner. I wanted to archive my laser disc collection to DVD's because the laser discs aren't very permanent. I haven't had time to try any movie burning though. To do DVD's it's fairly complicated, you have to decode the movie first, then shrink it to fit on a 4.7Gb disc.

I have a Sony burner that can manage both formats, although I mostly burn - (minus). No problems in my new and older DVD-player yet.

Get the Sony DRU-500A (or it's newer cousin - 510?). As c242 says above, it handles all formats of DVD & CD. From my reading the DVD+ format is better technically (more robust burning methods etc) but the DCD- format has been on the market longer & is therfore supported by more DVD players. Just like the old VHS & Beta video battles
