start10 suddenly stopped working

17" HP Pavillion run windows 10 1809 intel I-5-5200 2.2 ghz.  Start10 always worked.  wife came home and there were tiles all over the desktop and no icons.  no one had used the laptop in her absence.  no settings had been changed.  no updates that we know of.

     uninstalled start10 and rebooted.  reinstalled but no change.  upgraded win10 to 1909 but that didn't help either.  right clicking start button shows "configure start10" so the program is present but just not working

Sorry to hear you are having issues. please try the purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486022/start10-support-faq#reinstalling

Make sure to redownload the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purge, reinstall and reboot again. Retest it and report back.

Make sure you did not enable tablet mode in the OS.

used the bat file.  rebooted.  reinstalled and rebooted again.  

1.  the start menu is now the "modern type"

2.  desktop icons appeared momentarily during installation then disappeared

3.  clicking on desktop produces "evil tiles"  can''t get ride of them

This really does sound like tablet mode.

In that mode the desktop does not exist and the win10 menu is fullscreen.

If you open say notepad is it maximised always?

Could you post a screenshot of what you see when you click on the desktop as perhaps something else is causing similar symptoms.

went to windows settings.

1.  it's set on desktop mode

2.  when the device auto switches tablet mode on or off    set on "don't ask and don't switch"

3.  notepad opens to full screen

4.  interestingly i can't minimize ANY window and i don't see an attachment icon on this reply window to attach a jpeg of my screen

i may not be able to  post a reply for the next few days because of work........

just saw a notification to "update and restart"   did as directed.   icons are back.  and i can minimize chrome browseras well.  so all is well and this post can be closed...........thanks
