Screen Blinks Randomly

WIn 10

After installing Fences my laptop screen and attached monitor will black out for a second or two, then come back 2 or 3 times (day). I have worked with Dell, the laptop vendor, updated drivers, reset parameters, and anything else I can think of, but it continues. It started the day I installed the trial version of Fences. I like Fences and have purchased and integrated my desktop with Fences into a system that is very helpful and easy to work with, but as I am writer and spend 3 or 5 hours every day on my laptop, this blinking off and on is annoying at least and very frustrating daily. I need a fix, solution, or work around, or this software will be uninstalled and forgotten.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try the purge and reinstall steps as follow https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

Make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall Fences. Reboot again and retest. Report back here.

Thanks

Have done the instructions as provided, now I will watch for a couple of days to see if that helps. Thanks.

The problem still exists. Some days only one or twice, others, every 10 minutes or so.

Please try the following:

-For Win8/10 Users: Open the Start Screen, and type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator' from below.

-Type: sfc /scannow

-Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes)

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

If the SFC finds errors, but cannot fix them, please also run the following command in the same command prompt window:

dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-dism-command-line-utility-repair-windows-10-image

The above command should assist with replacing any damaged or problematic system files. Please note, however, since it may require restoring certain files, this process can take some time and you will need to be patient until it has completed.

Please let me know whether this resolves your problem or if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

Followed instructions, Win 10 reported:

"Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17763.503]

(c) 2018 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

C:\Windows\system32>"

Did not run your 2nd command as no issues were presented.

Followed all the instructions to uninstall and clean boot, waited 1 day, screen did not blink, then I reinstalled and the screen blinks occasionally with Fences installed (once every 20 to 30 minutes). Did another complete uninstall and have left it uninstalled, no blink issues for 2 days. It appears Fences is the problem.

Last question from me. Do you use one of this.

1) Websense or Forcepoint installed?

2) Desktop wallpaper changer/engine or using photo slideshow as wallpaper

3) Your have portal fences which link to networked folder or cloud

Thank you,

No, no, no.

But, Windows 10 does change the login picture randomly, but not do to a program I installed, or any setting that I have set.

Does it happen with if the external monitor is not attached?

I am not sure. I will use my laptop over the next few days not connected to the external monitor (which makes my job a lot easier) and let you know.

I should mention that I have been working with Dell on this also, and I got a bunch of updates yesterday from them, including video drivers. Maybe that will help. Fences reinstalled, monitor disconnected.

Sorry I did not respond earlier. It has been a few years so let me think for a few minutes. I remember it only blinked with the external monitor installed. I think I needed to perform all Dell and Microsoft updates, remove the video driver, then reboot and reinstall the video driver without the external monitor connected. Oh, I seem to remember it had something to do with the different video screen settings between the laptop and the external monitor also. I might have switched out the monitor also. I remember trying a bunch of things. But, I haven't had this problem for years now and I still think Fences is a great piece of software. Is there a Linux version out there? Or coming?

I have a similar problem with Fences flickering every few seconds to several minutes. I have run sfc /sacannow with no problems. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all to no avail. I could use some help. Thanks.

Also, check Windows Event Viewer to see if Windows Explorer is crashing.  It could be that is not 'flashing' but 'crashing'.
