Multiplicity [Copying] seems to be crashing on Win 10

When switching to the secondary machine

We are seeing an issue with Multiplicity (version 3.44) on Windows 10.  Both the primary and secondary have Windows 10 installed.  Both machines are on the same subnet on a private domain.  The set up was working fine before upgrade the primary machine from Windows 7 to Windows 10.  We deactivated the license on the old machine and activated it on the new.  Now the application is crashing when you move from the primary to the secondary.  The mouse makes it about an inch into the monitor on the secondary, then the app crashes on the primary.  The cursor then disappears on the primary, and you can't bring it back without locking the primary and unlocking it.  The event viewer shows the following during these events:

Faulting application name: Multipl2.exe, version: 3.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x52af40db

Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.17134.471, time stamp: 0xfe852bc4

Report Id: 32ddf2fd-7a7b-421b-8ff3-729686a1c23c

Faulting package full name:

Faulting package-relative application ID:

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiplicity on both machines.  I tried connecting directly to the IP of the secondary as opposed to the hostname.  I confirmed that the multiplicity ports were open on both machines.  Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?  Typically, if Multiplicity stops worked, restarting the services makes it work again, but that is not happening in this case.

Thanks,

Max

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

MP, for all that it is required to do, is remarkably stable - if it's crashing, it's likley been damaged or being affected by a 3rd party app (likely AV).

For the first, do this on all PCs:

https://forums.stardock.com/486104/multiplicity-support-faq#reinstalling

Try again.

If that fails, a clean boot will expose the latter if a 3rd party is a potential culprit:

Did you ever resolve this problem? I having the exact same one now, same error messages and every thing.

I've already re-installed and clean booted on both computers using the Purge script. Still just crashes with netdll problem the moment I move my mouse from primary to secondary.

Are the conditions the same as the OP:

The set up was working fine before upgrade the primary machine from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

...or no, this has never worked?

Same problem as far as I can tell. I didn't upgrade windows versions but windows did apply a regular update somewhat recently I think. Everything was working fine for the last several months. It started breaking the last day or two with seemingly the same symptoms as OP. Crashes whenever I move my mouse to another monitor/connected PC.

I'm in the same boat, mine started to crash a few days ago. Primary is Win 11 and secondary is Win 10, and from one day to the next, it started crashing when moving the mouse to the secondary machine.

Well something changed and it was (clearly) not MP nor have we seen anyone but you few reporting it.  Did ANYTHING change that you can think of on the settings \ software side?  Did any hardware change (mouse, network, etc)?

Did either of you try the clean boot (on both PCs) mentioned:

I'm back with an update. I upgraded my OS harddrive and instead of just making a clone of the old installation, I made a new from scratch, and the crashing problem have disappeared. So my case is hereby closed - false alarm, sorry.

Are you talking about the purge or the clean boot? I've narrowed down it down to either my graphic drivers or the action of alt tabbing out of a game. I have no issues with the primary (quits on itself and gives me the dll error) when am not playing the game. I'll deep dive into it over the weekend when I get some more time.

For what it's worth I was unable to fix the problem. I just quit using the software because I don't have the time to apparently wipe both my computers and reformat them like another in this thread did to solve it.

One would think the application might keep a rolling log somewhere with better information you could dig into. One that's not just the windows event log viewer. Or some sort of debug mode with resilient runtime exception handling so problems can be found and logged instead of just fast-crashing. But I guess not.

Let me know if you find something that fixes it for you.

Well, when you said 'only happens with that game', it makes me think anti-cheat stepping on toes, MPs specifically.   Is it a game that would utilize anti-cheat (any competitive shooter would for sure)?

If indeed that is the cause, there would be nothing we could do about it I am afraid.

I'm having this same issue. Happens at random times, sometimes when gaming, sometimes when vmware workstation is running, and sometimes when Firefox is running. Bascially, it's random. I've formatted and reinstalled on both machines and still persists. This is happening on my main computer, and restarting the service does fix it. I'm on Windows 11. Having some better logging inside the app would help.

The best 'logging' is a WinDBG dump, Aeon.  While this is for Start11, the same applies for MP (any app really).

https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1347321935/Manually+Collecting+Start+Crash+Dumps

Get us that and we can likely tell you what 3rd party app \ setting is causing problems with MP.

Thanks.

So I did a little testing and well am finding the issue to be random too. The game I play is iRacing which is a simulation motorsport game that uses Easy Anti Cheat. I just find it odd that after all these years only now am seeing this crashing. Either way alt/tabbing out of the game will sometimes crash it. If I go to services and restart multiplicity I don't have crashes again no matter how many times I alt/tab. I've also noticed as well that if I restart my machine after logging in once (Log in then hit restart) I don't have issues either. Also if I don't sim/game then no problems either. Will keep playing around with it next weekend and see what happens. Will post updates here.

It's extremely unlikely to be Anti-Cheat. I've used it while playing games that have EAC, Denuvo, and many other Anti-Cheats and it has never once caused an issue over the course of multiple years. I am not saying it can't be a recent development, I just think it's very unlikely.

Mine also just crashes outside of game when I move my mouse from the primary to a secondary shortly after restarting the computer with next to no background apps running.

MP is fantastically stable for what it does.  Nearly every employee here uses it daily, as well as countless businesses and retail consumers around the globe, without issue.  If something is causing it to crash (3rd party app \ Windows setting), it must be niche or we would see more such reports.

With that, we would be interested in what you see under a clean boot:

Looking forward to hearing your results.

Yeah, I've checked what you have posted up there, was already on, still getting that error message. I even turned on "Run as Administrator" in compatibility mode, hoping it was an issue maybe with permissions and where the dmp file is located.

I have been able to get it to crash pretty consistently, if I move the cursor back and forth between the 2 machines quickly. Will usually crash within 15-20 seconds. Was doing this to try and get the debugger to work. Normally it will just crash within and hour or 2 of normal use. The other thing I wanted to mention is it only crashes on the primary machine. Secondary is always fine. My "fix" for now is just a powershell script that restarts the multiplicity service, but that's kind of a bad workaround.

My crashing seems to be an issue with Windows 11 with updates from the last year. I pulled out 2 computers that haven't been updated in year and some change. Tried to get them to crash and couldn't. Used a stepper motor to move the mouse back and forth for 24 hours solid. No Crash. Did all the windows updates, and now it crashes about as consistently as my 2 machines I use every day.

I can see this thread is still active. During my OS reinstallation progress, I install programs again, when I suddenly need them, and because of that, I found the 3rd party app that made my instance of MP crash, the victim in my case was PDF Element Pro, I rolled back to an earlier release, and the problem went away again.

I can see the mentioning of EAC also may be part of the crash to others. I play The Division 2 which also uses EAC, and I have no trouble using MP while playing that game with EAC running.

I am receiving the same error on Windows 11 PCs. Mine seems to be related to syncing clipboards. If I copy an image to clipboard from remote and move to master - and move back and forth between the two - it reproduces. It did the same thing with files. I think sometimes I move to fast and flip back and forth before things are able to sync. I am also getting:

But this is set:
