Product Broken as Shipped - Object Desktop Manager Fails During Its Initialization

Unable to Setup Automatic Updates

I click on the Object Desktop Manager from the start menu and get the following pop up box:

"Problem Setting Up Automatic Updates"

"Sorry, unable to setup automatic update checks due to an unexpected error.  Please try again.  If it fails again, you may run Object Desktop manually to retrieve updates until the issue is resolved."

Until the issue is resolved?  By whom and when?  Was any diagnostic information captured and sent back to the corporate offices?  No.

Programmers:  Where is the first failure data capture of the problem?  If you KNOW there is a problem, why don't you reflect some of the diagnostic information for problem triage, analysis, and resolution?  Very, very poor coding and recovery.

If your solution is to reinstall, provide complete uninstallation guidance/instructions, and the product binaries to reinstall Object Desktop.

A Stardock customer since 1995 and a programmer for much longer.  Thank you.  And for the record, I just paid another annual renewal fee.

Hello,

We are aware of some issues with ODM for a minority of people / installs.

That said, if Object Desktop Manager is failing to reach our servers, please use this alternate method for getting your products:

https://www.stardock.com/support/productkeyretrieval

Be sure to try all the email addresses you know you have or could have used, especially ones you may use for PayPal or other payment services.

Please let us know if you should have any further questions/concerns.

This problem management record has nothing to do with product keys.  It's an execution time FAILURE from the START menu when the Object Desktop Manager tab is clicked.  THIS HAS BEEN AN OPEN PROBLEM for 18+ months.  The message text is poor at best and offers nothing to the user to resolve the issue.  It's a PRODUCT CODE DEFECT.

If the problem is known as you state, please offer a solution for submitting a dump, trace, setting a breakpoint to gather register values or variable settings to triage, mitigate, and resolve the problem.

End of sfowjs's quote

We appreciate the offer but we have all the data we need at this time.
