Possible bug(s)

Renaming and moving shortcuts

Hi,

I've had this issue for at least a half a year now. Very seldomly if I rename a shortcut inside a fence, it can rename another shortcut inside that fence or another fence. This is the main issue I have. Most recently today I renamed a text file inside another fence and later today I noticed that shortcut inside another fence had gotten the same name. And just to rule out this possibility, I'm 100% sure that both icons were not selected when renaming the original one.

The second possible bug is that fences sometimes randomly throws some shortcuts out of the fence for some odd reason or reasons. And if I check the snapshots, they're like they should be. This is even more seldom. And again, I'm 100% sure that I didn't accidentally move it. Unless there's some bug that causes fences to detect mouse click/drag even while some other program is fullscreen (like browser).

I've changed hardware/done full reinstall of windows in between, issues persist. I've also never had this issue with vanilla windows desktop, so I'm pretty convinced Fences is causing both of these issues.

If there's anything I can do to help debug these, I'm all ears. If this is not the right place to submit possible bugs, then please redirect me to the right place.

Thanks.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Would like to know what version you are having now. From my knowledge these similar issues were solved. And I have tested it on my system and the problem on longer appear.

Please try the purge and reinstall steps https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

Try that reboot, retest and please report back.

Thanks

Hi,

Previously I used 3.xxx (older version). Few weeks back I upgraded my hardware which also required me to reinstall windows and all programs (fences included). So the current install is very fresh and the version is the latest 3.0.8.1. I'd like to emphasize that these problems have persisted on both systems (before and after) and on the older and latest version of Fences. I can uninstall and reinstall, but I doubt it will have any effect (again, it's fresh install of windows and latest fences, same problems persist).

Hi,

I have few cases also similar to you where they also installed on a fresh system, their problem get solved by purge and reinstall steps.

Thank you,

Well, I already said that this issue has persisted for a long time. It happened on a old win 10 system with older fences, and it's happening now on an new win 10 install with up to date fances. I can try to reinstall it, but honestly it's more than likely just unnecessary work. Pretty much everything points at Fences being the problem. You dont have any logging system or similar to help with debugging?

I don't know if there is logging system build in on Fences. I have forwarded your problem to Stardock Support team for their assistant. Since it on weekend, it will probably be on Monday. So, Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patient.

Thanks

Are these renames happening on MS office files or any random file type can see the issue happen (I am only focusing on the first issue)?

It doesn't seem to matter. Few times I have renamed a .txt file and it renamed an application shortcut, once it renamed folder. Also once renaming application shortcut caused other application shortcut to be renamed.

One thing that I'm pretty sure of is that it does not rename the wrong file instantly, but rather some odd time later. I've always noticed this only hours or days later.

Could it be immediate and you are just not noticing?  While we have seen renaming issue with Fences (thought to be resolved and why basj insisted on a purge / reinstall), never has it been latent - its always immediately seen.

It could, but it has happened so many times I'd probably notice that. Plus I highly doubt the same issue could persist with after already reinstalling windows/fences few weeks back? But yeah, I can do that purge/reinstall, do some more testing and report back...
