Deactivates when Rebooting.

So we are activating 42 terminals in our business with a single license key, and so far everything has been smooth. We only have used 34 of these activations so far, however we have two terminals that just don't seem to retain the license.

I can provide the key and the email (or login to my stardock account) and it will activate fences, but when the computer reboots it pops up asking for product activation as if it wasn't activated before.

i've tried uninstalling, restarting, then re-installing. I've made sure everything was gone, this hasn't fixed it. I've cleared the cache, this didn't fix my issue. Lastly, I decided to deactivate that terminal from the stardock website and reinstall, it still doesn't retain the license.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Have you try the purge and reinstall steps on those two. These steps : https://forums.wincustomize.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

Try it, reboot and retest. And report back. Thanks

This purge tool didn't work on the first terminal, so I tried it on another problem terminal and it still didn't fix my issue.

the strange part is even though I run the purge tool as administrator, reboot, then reinstall fences, When I get to the product screen, it autofills the email used for the license.

Is the purge tool possibly not purging my machines completely?

(to be clear, about 97% of my terminals have installed and activated properly).

End of quote

After said reboot, is there still a 'license.sig' in with a date / time that is consistent with when you last activated:

\ProgramData\Stardock\Fences3

If so, if any of the primary PC (VM instance) characteristics have changed (there are a few we observe), Fences will prompt for reactivation to create a new sig (Fences thinks its a different PC).

If it is missing:

  • Do you destroy / wipe a PC on log off?  That would make these PCs a bit different than the other 38, I suppose.
  • Are you, on these PCs, running the deactivation script (supplied when a SLS server is purchased from us), at log off?
  • Are these PCs unique from the others in any way (settings, software, (GPO / policies)?

So to answer a few questions. We don't destroy/wipe a PC on logoff. We actually don't run anything at logoff, we only run the activation script at logon. This script has worked fine for all terminals and is pushed via GPO.

Secondly, I compared this terminal with other terminals through GPO to see the difference, there is nothing that stands out. It has all of the same policies our other terminals have.

We don't run the deactivation script, only the activation.

Like you had mentioned though, when I reboot the license.sig is missing, where it was generated before reboot.

We have a GPO to push all desktop icons the computers need, then we run a script to set the xml template. These things have not caused issues with our other terminals, so not sure why I have 3-4 terminals with an exception. I just can't get fences activated on these terminals. Thanks!
