I optimize about every 2 weeks and use Executive Software Diskeeper.

well, this is how I optimize (about every few months):
1. Use BootVis to trace all files accessed during start-up.
2. Defrag with PerfectDisk (from norton suite) using BootVis data to layout start-up files in order at the beginning of the drive.

It works wonders, cut my start-up time in WinXP from 55 sec. to 35 sec.

I've read that defragging actually extends disk life because it reduces stress caused by having to the heads wandering all over the disk to read fragmented files. My experience has been good. I've been using the same HD for three years w/o any problems. (I think I just jinxed myself)

A storm blew my HD out some months ago. Was just about to turn it off too....Many people around my area got hit and many HDs and whatnot were lost.


DM, I used to optimize every week but thought that was too much. Like wear and tear.

Games will defrag your HD too. So it really depends on how often I optimize. Sometimes a week, sometimes a month.


You're better off keepin your computer on too. Cause shutting down and turning on causes wear and tear.

I am kind of a compulsive defragmenter.... I didn't know there were other ways to do it! Twice weekly, sometimes. Or when I notice a slowing. Or when I have done a lot of deleting.

(I didn't when I first got a comp... took 6 hours the first time!)

NTFS file system just sweet for this with Norton Speed Disk, usually defrag every one or two months, and thats with loads of gaming working with graphics and such. Also fixes out the prefetch files.

With FAT32 was usually once a week.

Norton Usually has best tools.

Been using Golden Bow's Vopt for years http://www.vopt.com Now using VoptXP 7.13. Nice 'n' fast. Can defrag paging files & MFT. Very configurable. I've got it set up to restart my machine with a minimal driver set, batch-defrag all partitions, then reboot. Love it....
