well I did it, thanks to all of your advice and patience, this newbie is now using copperdeck, my first skin.I got the clock (sysmetrix), icons (iconpackager) and logon screens working too.I love the techie looking skins with all the extras, icons, wallpapers etc...any recommendations? thanks again.

Well you might want to look at more of Treetog's work. There's also DavidK's work too. Lots of really talented authors here but just offhand I mention them since they've done skins that might be have a "techie" look. There are more, but I can't think at the moment. Just go to say the WindowBlind Library for example and search on their names to see all their windowblind skins. When I first got WB I just toured through the entire library since I liked so many different styles. Oh, Chad Ross is another great author who's put out suites. Have fun.
