Does anyone here use the Gimp???

I have been attempting to use the gimp, but can't make heads or tails of it... if anyone knows of a tutorial, or a good site to check out with info it would be gratefully appreciated... also if anyone has any advice on anything better, that would be gratefully appreciated as well

I once tried the gimp too,da_zman, and guess what?.... I couldn't make head or tail of it either.
I was going to try and use it because I couldn't afford to buy a graphics program. Fortunately, my Mom came to the rescue and bought Photoshop 5.5 for me for my birthday! I still use it now. (still can't afford a new one!)

I think im giving up on the gimp, even after a tutorial, Paintshop pro is just so much easier... how does photoshop work out for you??? I may get an old copy off ebay or something... hmmmm... I started a windowblinds skin, and want to finish it up, redo some of sections, and finish the title bar, and such...

I think that the majority of people always feel most comfortable with the first program they started with. If you start with Paint Shop Pro, you will always find that program the easiest to use. It's hard to change once you have become familiar with a way of doing things. Well, that's how I see it.
I have tried demo's of most of the others, but they just feel alien after Photoshop.
Do you understand what I mean? I don't feel I've explained myself too well!
(I'd better go to bed...)

I used the Gimp for a while when I was running Linux on a second drive. This was back around RedHat 6. I started to get the hang of it but it was slow going. I've used PSP for so long, learning a new program was difficult and I kept wanting to go back to PSP

After a lot of my friends in the Graphics business kept at me about how much better Photoshop was than PSP, I finally broke down and got a copy off Ebay but it's the same thing. I'll play with it awhile, get frustrated and go back to PSP
But I'm hanging in there and slowly but surely learning the differences.
Who knows, I may go back and try the Gimp again!

I tried the Gimp too, not an easy thing to use, I tried it for a few weeks and eventually went back to PSP and Photoshop much easier to cope with.

here´s a complete book to download: http://manual.gimp.org/
and another one: http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/index.html

form your submissions i saw you are interested in icons:
here´s a tutorial by jimmac (best iconist around): http://developer.ximian.com/articles/tutorials/icons/output/
and one (and more) by Tigert: http://tigert.gimp.org/gimp/tutorials/

general site for tutorials: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials.html

most older Photoshop tutorials work for The GIMP as well (the ones that do not use layer effects.) of course PS tutorials using layer effects can be used as well, but that requires some basic knowledge how graphics editing works.
