Try uninstalling the Windows update labelled 811493. It's responsible for slowing many a pc to a crawl. Microsoft are working on a fix for this fix

Just tonight Microsoft have downgraded this update from a critical update to a recommended update. Too late for many I fear.

Just curious, are these windows updates a good idea to just let them install into my system. The last problem is making me think not. So for now I'll just leave automatic updates disabled.

I never let XP do automatic updates. You haven't a clue what it's installing when it runs in the background. I prefer to use Windows Update and read the articles first so I know exactly what it's for. This extra caution comes from running NT servers at work where you can't afford any mistakes. When a new update comes out it's always worth waiting a few days to see if there is any negative feedback.

On top of that I always make sure I have a back-up just in case the uninstall feature doesn't work or an uninstall is not available. A recent example of that is one of the recommended updates stopped Unreal Tournament from running, uninstalling the update didn't work so I restored from back-up. 40mins later it was like nothing had happened.

Thanks for your logic fuzzy thats what I plan to do for now on. Unfortunately the problem is back. Not sure why. I haven't had much time to play, since I thought the problem was solved.

Does anyone know if it is a good idea to use the reinstallation disc for windows. I just can't seem to find the problem, and I don't know if doing this will hurt anything with desktop-X. Even the sub menues in ps pro are freezing up everything. Everything else is fine as long as I don't pause my mouse on anything.

Well, You can choose to wipe your system when you reinstall XP. That'll definately get rid of the problem. But you won't have Desktop X or anything else fo that matter. Hope that helped.

Thats what I'm trying to avoid. I guess if I had to do this, I would just have to reinstall objectdesktop and start from scratch. The frustrating part is not knowing what caused the problem. Especially if it doesn't correct this , it will be a pretty big setback.

Beninati, Have you done things like ScanDisk, and Defrag?

I know if I don't run my maintenance programs regularly, my computer gets real slow, and freezes. Then I do my maintenance programs, and it's fine.

What about system restore feature? Set it back to the date it last worked well? That helped me once.

However, wiping the system will definitely get rid of the program, and speed it up, but just be sure to back everything up (if you can) so you save on download time when you are re-installing everything.

I did all the obvious maintenance tasks including system restore(4 different restore points). That didn't help. I just don't feel like I explored all possibilities. Even though I think I have."at turtle speed "

this might sound stupid,but......are you sure MS didn't re-install 811943 before you disabled auto?

I recently started having the same problem as Beninati describes. When I looked in on this thread and saw the suggestion to remove the winupdate, I figured it was worth a try. It is in my Add/Remove Programs list but when I hit "Remove" it gave me a warning message that DX and OD, among a couple of other listings, may not run right if I continued. So I cancelled the uninstall hoping some of you fine and knowledgeable folks could give me some advice. TIA, and boy, am I glad I found this site and started using OD! I've been having a blast playing with it for the last month or so. It would make it just that much better if I can work out a couple of little bugs like this one. Take care.

Beninati try 1 more thing before you wipe your system....go to Windows Update and scan for updates. It should show 811493 again in Recommended updates. If it doesn't it means the update is still in your machine...if it does... well

I just scanned for updates and yes it is there in recommended updates. I guess I'm running out of options.
