Can't get rid of a fence

How do I get rid of a fence? I have an empty fence which did ontain a shortcut to a file which no longer exists.

Any help would be appreciated.

Click on the red x found at the right on the Titlebar.

The X is white, not red, and when I clicked on it I got the message "Remove this folder portal". I then clicked on this message and - result! - the fence disappeared.

I'm very grateful for your help in sorting this out.
